When they learned that the group had returned, they changed into more formal clothes and came downstairs, though it was late.

George's eyes swept over Shannon to Thalia and Benjamin standing behind her. Then, he looked at the empty space behind them, and his gaze darkened slightly.

Thalia was confused when Marie suddenly said, "Hec said your mother came with you. It's late, so why didn't you bring her back to stay the night?"

Marie didn't know where they'd gone. She assumed they'd been out on some business and now returned. Naturally, she thought Louise was still in Seastone and perhaps staying elsewhere due to the late hour.

Everyone was visibly surprised at Marie's mention of Louise. After all, the two families had barely met, and given Louise's unique identity, no one had thought to associate her with the Jensens.

Thalia paused before explaining, "My mother went back to Jamborough."
