Sheila's and Francis' expressions changed drastically when they heard Shannon talking about shielding Rachel from her calamities.

Sheila's eyes widened in horror. She instinctively wanted to ask how Shannon found out about it. Her lips even parted, but she caught herself just in time.

Noticing the quizzical looks from the other guests, she quickly schooled her expression into one of incredulity and disbelief.

"Where did you hear such a thing, Shannon? How can you believe such superstitious claims?" Sheila exclaimed.

With a look of sorrow, she continued, "I know you're part of the Jensen family, so you don't want to acknowledge us because you're better than us now. I understand that, but that's still no reason for you to come up with such an outlandish excuse!

"You're breaking my heart!"

Shannon's gaze turned colder as she stared at Sheila. She knew the Grays would continue to hound her if she didn't settle things today. After finally managing to leave them, she couldn't be bothered to have anything to do with them anymore.

A thought came to her. She was just about to act upon it when she heard a loud voice calling from the entrance, "I trust Ms. Jensen!"

Everyone turned around and saw that the newcomers were Donald and Helen. With their gifts still in hand, they cut through the crowd to reach Shannon.

Helen glared at Sheila and said, "Ms. Jensen isn't the vain and materialistic person you're making her out to be.

"If she said you Grays only took her in to exchange your daughter's fate for hers, that means you people must've done it! Since you did it, don't try to pretend like you're all innocent. Are you trying to take everyone else here for a fool?"

The guests felt a bit affronted about that. All in attendance today were those who were fairly close to the Jensens. They were acquainted with the Shaws, too, and Helen was known for being a kind, dignified woman.

No one expected to see this assertive side of her—she was even reacting this way for Shannon's sake. Did they know each other?

Even the Jensens were puzzled, but they deduced it had something to do with the reason the Shaws came over in a rush last night. They weren't sure what Shannon did, however.

Shannon was also taken aback that Helen was openly coming to her defense like that. Regardless of her intentions, Shannon was still grateful for the help.
