Francis and Rachel were aghast. They had no idea why Sheila seemed to have suddenly lost her mind.

Rachel was tearing up, but she tried to explain, "That's not true. My mom is just saying nonsense. We didn't treat Shannon like that—"

Before she could finish speaking, someone in the crowd snorted—it was Clara Leigh, the young woman in black. She was the one who first mocked Rachel for dressing up as though she were the star of tonight's event.

Clara remarked, "Save it. Even the people all the way in Jamborough can smell how fishy this whole thing is. Why bother pretending like we can't tell what you Grays are trying to do?"

Several other guests laughed mockingly as well.

Rachel, who had never suffered such grievances before, forgot all about her parents. Covering her face, she started running for the door. She had only taken a few steps when she bumped into someone.

His features looked as though they had been sculpted to perfection. Unlike Bradley, who was pleasantly attractive, this man had a cold, formidable air to his handsomeness. When his dark eyes flickered over her with a cool gaze, she felt as though she was being sucked into them.

Sitting on the floor, Rachel continued to stare at the mesmerizing man. She heard the people around her exclaiming, "Isn't that Mr. Cooper? It's him, isn't it? He's so intimidating."

"Don't people say that Mr. Cooper hates attending these sorts of events the most? Why is he here today?"

"Oh, shoot! Hey, my gown should be fine, right? I heard Mr. Cooper hates it when people are dressed too fancily. I hope he doesn't notice me."
