Chapter 109
Sarah instinctively replied, “Impossible.”
Lily was living with Xavier, right? How c
could
d Terence possibly be cooling for her?
“I heard it with my ears!” Nadia insisted eamestly.
There was a brief silence on the other end of the phone. Then, Sarah quickly made an excuse to hang up and dialed another number.
“Keep an eye on everything Lily does where she goes, who she meets!”
By 5:00 pm, that evening, Lily was done with work. She’d arranged to meet Terence at a nearby street, hoping to avoid being seen by colleagues and causing misunderstandings.
Stepping out of Lupier, she pulled out her phone and called Emma.
“Emma, I won’t be home for dinner tonight.”
Emma immediately asked, “Will Mr. Fulton be home?”
The streets were packed with people rushing to finish their workday. Lily sidestepped a few pedestrians and answered softly, “I’m not sure. You can call him to check and also tell him I’ll be working late and won’t be home for dinner.”
“Okay,” Emma agreed without hesitation
Lily put her phone away and quickened her pace. She turned the corner onto the next street and immediately spotted Terence’s SUV
The moment he saw her, he opened the front passenger door. Lily, who had planned to sit in the back, paused for a moment. Then, she walked around to the front of the car and climbed into the passenger seat.
“Have you been waiting long?”
It had only been about five or six minutes since she left the office, but the chilly winter air had reddened her nose, and her voice sounded a little nasally.
Terence turned up the car’s heater. “I just got here. Maryanne has already bought the ingredients, so we can head there directly.”
“She bought them?” Lily hesitated while fastening her seatbelt. “We’d agreed I’d treat you guys, but now she’s the one treating us?”
“Don’t worry about it. It’s just an excuse to hang out. It doesn’t matter who’s treating.”
As the car pulled away, Terence locked the doors. However, when he glanced in the rearview mirror, he saw someone standing on the sidewalk, taking pictures of the back of the car. Instinctively, he hit the brakes.
Lily stumbled, almost pitching forward and slamming into the window.
“What’s going on?”
She turned to look behind them, following Terence’s gaze. T
The street was crowded with pedestrians, but she couldn’t spot anything unusual.
Terence looked around again, but the person was gone. He turned back, released the brake, and stepped on the gas. “Sorry. I thought I saw someone I
Lily asked, “Should we go say hi?”
“No need. I must have been mistaken.” Terence didn’t want to worry her with anything uncertain.
The drive from Lupier to Bayview Gardens took about 20 minutes. Any car not registered with the community had to stop and sign in.
When they arrived, Lily unbuckled her seatbelt. “I’ll go sign us in. You can go ahead.”
