She crouched on the ground and set the cake box upright before picking up the pieces that weren’t dirty and placing them gently back inside. Her hands were smeared with cream and bits of chocolate. 

The blinking lights on the cake continued to twinkle as a faint melody began to play. It was a birthday song 

The sound was soft, yet it rang out in the stillness of the night and reached Xavier’s ears. 

A flicker of surprise crossed his face. “It’s your birthday today?” 

“It’s none of your business.” Lily didn’t look up. She tidied up the mess before picking up the scattered debris and tossing it into the trash. 

She took a napkin from her pocket to wipe her hands when she was done
