In the war room, maps were scattered across the long oak table, each one marked with red ink, tracking vampire movements and rogue activity. Warriors stood outside the door, waiting for Eva’s command. The air buzzed with urgency and fear, but inside, a different kind of battle had just begun.
“You’re not even scared anymore,” Tiana snapped, her voice trembling as she stood across from her sister. Her hands were clenched at her sides, eyes blazing. “That’s what terrifies me.”
Eva’s jaw tightened. She stood still, her gaze steady, unflinching. Her golden eyes held the weight of everything she had endured. “I don’t have time to be scared.”
“That’s not strength,” Tiana shot back. “That’s madness.”
“You think I don’t feel anything?” Eva’s voice cracked as she took a step forward. “You think I haven’t been waking up every night wondering if I’ll lose them? If I’ll lose you?”
Tiana shook her head, her eyes glossy with unshed tears. “Then say that. Show me that. Because right now, all I see is someone who doesn’t even blink when people die. You’re shutting me out, Eva. I’m your twin, and I barely recognize you anymore.”
Eva closed her eyes, her shoulders sagging for just a moment. “If I stop now,” she whispered, opening her eyes again, “we all die. There is no other option, Tia. I have to be like this. For the pups. For the pack. For you.”
“I didn’t ask you to protect me like this,” Tiana said, her voice softer now but still hurt. “I just wanted my sister. Not the Alpha. Not the weapon. Just you.”
Eva turned away, her back stiff, her hands shaking at her sides. “There’s no space for me right now.”
Tiana stormed out, brushing past the guards without another word, her heart pounding so loudly in her ears she couldn’t hear anything else. The cold night air hit her face as she stepped outside. Her breath came out in harsh puffs, and her chest tightened with a weight she couldn’t name.
Dany found her minutes later, standing behind the training grounds, staring at the moon.
“She’s not invincible,” he said gently as he approached.
