He was like a ghost, slipping in silently and vanishing just as quickly from her sight. The light was still on, but her heart was in chaos.

She could handle herself, but she was terrified Zach might hurt Brock. The only safe move was to send Brock back to the Welton family. She needed to talk this over with Caroline.

An hour later, the operating room lights went out.

Dr. Roth stepped out, took off his mask, and gave Eliza a reassuring thumbs-up. Her heart finally settled.

After making sure Mikey was comfortable, Eliza left. On the way, she called Caroline and arranged to meet at a nearby café.

“What's going on? Why the sudden urgency?” Caroline asked, a worried look on her face.

Eliza handed her a coffee, trying to calm her racing heart. “Sis, Zach found me today and said some troubling things. I’m scared he might go after Brock. I’m thinking of sending Brock to Mom’s. Do you think that’s a good idea?”

Caroline was taken aback. Zach was seriously going after Eliza and her child. That meant he was desperate.

“Zach is definitely unhinged. Sending Brock to the old house isn’t a bad idea, but aren’t you afraid Casper might... figure out his connection to the baby?”

Casper had amnesia. He might think of many things, but he probably wouldn’t connect the dots about his relationship with the baby. Eliza wasn’t too worried.

“Sis, if Casper asks, just come up with a reason. I don’t think he’s interested in making wild guesses.”

Caroline nodded. “Of course, that’s no problem.”

“Thanks, sis.” Eliza was genuinely grateful.

The doorbell rang suddenly, pulling Eliza back to reality. Startled, she slowly got up and walked towards the door. She didn’t expect Casper.

A flicker of surprise crossed her eyes. “Why are you here?”

He was holding some brain-boosting supplements and a few fruits. His demeanor was gentle, like an old friend. “I heard your dad was discharged. I came to check on him.”

“Please, come in.” Eliza politely welcomed Casper into the house.

Mikey sat in a wheelchair, barely recognizing Casper. After a brief glance, he lowered his head again, possibly asleep.

Casper set down the gifts and glanced at Mikey. “What did Dr. Roth say?”
