He always knew that once she woke up, she'd want a divorce.

“Please, can we not get divorced?” he pleaded, practically on his knees in front of her, holding her hands like his life depended on it. “You promised to give me a chance. You can't just go back on that.”

“When did I ever promise you anything?” she shot back. “You made that promise to yourself.”

Alright then.

Even if he had just imagined she agreed, in his mind, she had given him a chance. There was no turning back now.

“Eat something, and if you don't like the ring, just forget about it.” He didn't take the ring back, quickly shifting gears. “I'll call Dr. Caleb to come over and check on you again.”

Casper made himself scarce. He wasn’t in the mood to hear Eliza’s rejection.

When Caleb got the call, he arrived at Casper’s place in no time flat.

Seeing Eliza awake felt like a miracle.

She was in good spirits, thanks to not being out for too long. If she'd been in a coma for a year or more, she’d probably be a shadow of her former self.

“Wow, sis, I guess my surgery wasn’t for nothing.”

Eliza glanced up at Caleb, who was grinning ear to ear, remembering how he’d trashed everyone else during the surgery.

“Then I owe you thanks, Dr. Caleb, not just for your skills but for your fascinating life commentary.”

Caleb’s smile faltered, his lips twitching awkwardly. “Sis, you didn’t… hear any of that, did you?”

“I heard it all.” She nodded.

Eliza didn’t catch that. “What did you say?”

Caleb quickly shook his head. “Nothing, I didn’t say anything. I should get going.”

After he left, she sat on the sofa for a while, her vision blurring. Rubbing her eyes, they felt sore and swollen.

Casper came over, sitting down next to her and naturally taking her hand in his, kissing it gently. “Tired? Maybe you should rest upstairs?”

“Casper, can you not touch me?” She pulled her hand away, shifting to the side. “I want to leave tomorrow.”

“Leave to where?” He followed her move, looking puzzled. “You’re not fully recovered yet, and you’re this eager to get away from me?”

“It’s not about escaping, it’s…” She needed time to think. Casper being around was unsettling her heart, but she couldn’t just say that. “I miss Brock.”
