"Casper…"

Casper was as stubborn as a mule, and no one could change his mind.

Caroline stepped out of his room and sank into the living room sofa, her emotions all over the place. Dillon handed her a steaming cup of coffee and whispered, "Try not to get into it with Mr. Casper, he's already in a tough spot."

"I wasn't arguing with him," Caroline replied, taking a sip. "I just want him to face life head-on and take care of his injuries."

She knew his stubborn streak all too well. He'd act like he didn’t care about Eliza, but deep down, she was sure he was dying to see her. Otherwise, why would he show up at the award ceremony?

"Dillon, what exactly did the doctors say about his condition?"

"Well, Mr. Casper’s healing up decently. The fracture's pretty bad, but it missed the vital spots. It’ll mend with time. But those burns… they're gonna need a lot of surgery, at least three years’ worth."

Three years. And that's if he actually goes through with it. Otherwise, it's just wishful thinking.

"But he... he doesn’t even want to start treatment." Caroline's voice was tinged with worry.

Dillon knew Casper better than anyone. He’d tried every trick in the book to convince him, but nothing seemed to stick.

"The thing is, what really weighs on Mr. Casper's mind is Eliza. She's the reason he'd consider getting better." But right now, that seemed like a long shot.

"When he insisted we tell Eliza he was dead, I couldn't wrap my head around it. Did he think he wasn’t going to make it? Or was there more to it?"

"Could be a year, maybe two," he shrugged. "Depends on how Casper's doing. I’m here for him."

"I think you should keep tabs on Eliza..." Caroline was also set on finding out if Eliza was expecting. "If she is pregnant, as the months go by, it'll get harder for her to manage. Remember how tough it was for her with Brock?"

Dillon was taken aback, "She's really carrying Mr. Casper’s child? If that’s true, why hasn’t she mentioned it? Even if not to me, she should have told you or the old lady. Handling this alone just isn’t smart."

Why Eliza hadn’t spoken up was a mystery to Caroline. She figured Eliza must have her own reasons.

"I’ve told Casper about this, hoping it’ll push him to get proper treatment. So he can return to Eliza in the best shape possible and take on the role of a father."

That was all Caroline could do. What Casper ultimately decided was out of her hands.
