One afternoon, Renee called Eliza, hoping to swing by and check on Casper for a couple of their classmates. Eliza had initially thought about saying no, but she didn’t want Renee and the others to feel awkward, so she agreed.
When the doorbell rang, Renee hesitated for a moment. Eliza opened the door herself, greeting her with a warm smile, “Renee, glad you could make it.”
Renee lingered at the entrance, unsure. “Eliza, didn’t you and Casper split up? How come you’re living together again?”
She still hadn’t pieced together the puzzle of Eliza and Casper’s relationship. Eliza gently took her hand, guiding her inside, “Renee, we’ve remarried. We didn’t get the chance to tell everyone at the gathering the other day, sorry about that.”
“Remarried?” Renee echoed, a bit taken aback. She vaguely recalled meeting Eliza in the hospital years ago, battered and bruised, and had advised her to leave Casper back then. After that, her own life had spiraled, and she’d lost touch with Eliza.
“He’s changed a lot, and over the years, we’ve managed to clear up most of our misunderstandings, so… we thought we’d give it another shot,” Eliza explained, choosing her words carefully. It was a personal matter, and going into detail would take all day.
Renee nodded slightly, not pressing further. Casper was sitting in the living room. Although they had met a few times in the past, Renee’s visit had a hint of apology, making her feel a bit tense.
“Mr. Casper, how’s your head doing?” she asked politely, handing over a small gift. “I’m really sorry about my classmates. They didn’t know who you were and acted rashly. Please don’t hold it against them.”
Casper nodded in acknowledgment. Renee felt a bit awkward, unsure of what to say next. Talking about compensation seemed unnecessary, as they clearly didn’t lack money. And apologizing felt hollow since the culprits weren’t there. She was banking on Eliza’s influence to smooth things over.
A servant brought in coffee, which Eliza passed to Renee. “He’s doing fine, just a mild concussion. He’s been resting up these past few days, so no need to worry,” Eliza reassured her.
“As for the medical bills…” Renee hesitated, “…I know you’re not short on money, but…”
“Those who are spoiled often think they’re untouchable. You’re in a good place now, appreciate it,” Renee advised, though she couldn’t help but reflect on her own messy situation.
Before Daniel cheated, she had genuinely believed that even if every man on earth strayed, he’d be the exception. Looking back, it felt like a cruel joke.
Seeing Renee’s somber expression, Eliza felt a pang of sympathy. “Has he really decided to leave?”
“The divorce papers have been sent my way a few times now. Each time, I claim the property division isn’t fair and ask for a revision, but the truth is…” she chuckled bitterly, “…I just don’t want to let go of this marriage.”
“In marriages, if a woman mentions divorce, it usually doesn’t happen. But if a man does, it’s pretty much over,” Eliza observed, knowing Renee understood her predicament all too well.
