"I mean..." He paused, choosing his words carefully, making sure they were gentle and easy to accept. "Did you come back by yourself? It's snowing pretty hard, and the roads must be slippery. It's not safe to be out there alone."

"Oh," Eliza replied, unfazed. "Yeah, the roads are definitely slick, but don't worry, I came back with Gabe."

She was straightforward about it, not a hint of secrecy.

Casper took a drag from his cigarette, his eyes lost in the swirling snow outside. "Since it's snowing, it's best to stay in this afternoon. I’ll come by to pick you up tomorrow."
