Evadne was left in disbelief after hearing the story 

Leaving aside whether Avery, with his gentlemanly demeanor, was capable of such a heinous act, it seemed out of character for him to get his own hands dirty when he could easily have someone else deal with Byron. 

So, she gathered herself and firmly said, “Byron, this is something very serious. We need proof. You should bring this up with Mr. Chambers and the police, not me.” 

“Miss Ashbourne, you saved me, you’re my savior! I can’t just stand by and watch you fall into a trap!” 

Byron’s eyes held a genuine mix of anxiety and sincerity. “I know Avery’s been courting you, and you’ve been spending some time with him. I just don’t want you to be fooled by his act. That guy’s been a psychopath since he was a kid! His gentlemanly demeanor is just a facade. Deep down he’s nothing more than a wolf in sheep’s clothing! He’s only pursuing you to leverage the prestige of the Ashbourne family. He doesn’t truly care about you!” Even though Avery might not be a saint, Byron was no better. After all, the accident at the horse ranch was his “masterpiece”

Matthew whispered, “Are you really giving up on Byron?”

Evadne stared at him, stunned

That man had also questioned her almost hysterically, asking why she wouldn’t give him a shred of trust. 

“Byron lost a leg, and he wouldn’t go to such extremes just to frame you.”

He managed a weak smile, picked up a piece of cake with a fork and took a big bite, chewing forcefully. 

Just like his overwhelming love for her, what’s done can’t be undone. 

Some things will never be the same again. 

After parting from Avery, Evadne felt a mix of emotions. 

Cassius‘ call came in just then, and she quickly picked up.

“Evadne, Elvis has gotten a hold of the thing you wanted; Cassius said with a faint smile. 

“Things? What is it? Evadne looked puzzled.

“Elvis is coming back tonight too? That’s great! I miss him so much!” Evadne rubbed her eyes, her voice choked with emotion. 

The ever–observant Cassius detected her emotional state. Feeling guilty, he uttered, “My apologies, I shouldn’t have mentioned Elvis returning. He initially wanted it to be a surprise for you. I was just too excited and let it sl*p.” 

“Cassius, I don’t need any surprises. I just want my family around me.” 

But she knew it was difficult. 

“Evadne, are you in Elmsworth? At the hospital where Byron is?” 

“Yes”
