Elspeth rattled the bars of her holding cell with a metallic clang, still struggling desperately as she roared at Arnold with a snarl, “Arnold! How dare you con me with fake evidence! As a district attorney, to present falsified evidence in court! You’re abusing your power! This is misconduct! Your so–called evidence is worthless!” 

Arnold looked at her with an expression full of irony, showing not a trace of fear. 

Indeed, becoming a paragon of justice had always been his life’s ambition, and he had risked his career by using the phony evidence against Elspeth. 

But he didn’t regret it for a second.

Before his words ceased echoing, Frederic stood up, radiating a chill, and left without a backward glance 

The next second, all his associates stood and left en masse, leaving the spectator seats, once packed, now occupied only by the Ashbourne family. 

“Frederic, it’s not true! I’ve never killed anyone! Frederic!” Elspeth cried out, reaching towards Frederic’s retreating figure, but the only response was the resounding slam of the courtroom door.
