Chapter 643 

After calming Suri down, Evadne and Thaddeus retreated to their room. 

With the door locked behind them, Evadne’s lips parted as if to speak, but Thaddeus, with his long arms, wrapped around her slender waist. His lips, trembling with anticipation, sealed hers in a precise kiss. 

Her lovely eyes widened in surprise, but soon she closed her lashes and nestled into his neck, melting into his embrace like a warm bundle of cotton. 

Yet he held her gingerly, as if fearing she might vanish into thin air if held too tight. 

Their kiss was passionate and tangled, a fiery dance of lips and breath. 

In the growing warmth of the room, her moans intertwined with his heavy breaths. Evadne felt his breath, the heat of his skin through his shirt, and the intoxicating dance of their tongues, all threatening to engulf her completely to dissolve her. 

It was a long kiss, spinning her world until at last, Thad managed to pull back, his desire still unchecked. 

“It’s that time of the month, we can’t.” 

Feeling the change in his body, Evadne blushed, her fingers playfully wrapped around his tie. “If you really need to, I can help you in other ways.” 

Thaddeus shook his head, his eyes brimming with unshed tears, and tenderly kissed her forehead, nose, and the corners of her lips. 

“Thad.” 

“Does it still hurt here?” 

His hand trembled as it caressed her flat belly, sending waves of warmth through her. 

She understood his innuendo, a bittersweet ache filled her heart, but she managed a faint smile, “It doesn’t hurt anymore. It stopped hurting a long time ago.” 

“I’ve been such a fool, and so wrong.” 

Thaddeus fought back his tears, “All the pain you’ve endured, and I’m just now… starting to understand. It shouldn’t have been Suri kneeling at the Bright’s doorstep. It should have been me.” 

“What are you talking about?. A man don’t kneel easily. Why kneel to them?” 

Evadne chided softly, tapping his forehead with her finger. “Back then, I had just come off the operating table, still groggy from anesthesia, unaware of anything around me. Had I known Suri would kneel before the Bright family for my sake, I would rather have lived without a womb than agree to her doing that.“, 

The thought pained her, her words tinged with the sting of affection for Suri, “I know she did it for me. But if the price is to trample one’s own dignity, I’d rather not have it.” 

Thaddeus‘ heart ached, the memory of his own cold abandonment haunting him. 

She had just wanted to stay by his side. 

“This is odd. I feel like everything has been off from the start.” 

Evadne changed the subject, her finger resting on her chin in thought, “Suri’s acting strange, Chasel’s acting strange, and Cassius even more so. I can’t shake the feeling they’re keeping something from us.” 

Thaddeus pondered, “Maybe there’s an issue with the Bright family, and they can’t talk about it. As for Cassius, he’s always been close to Dr. Bright. With Dr. Bright being called away, he must be upset.” 

“Indeed, they’re very close.” 

She thought, “Almost inseparable. Chasel was either whispering secrets into Cassius’s ear or making him laugh, like a pair of love–struck teens.” 

Lucky for her, she wasn’t into that sort of thing, otherwise, she’d be content just shipping them all day long. 

“But seriously, for Warner to come at us alone, so brazenly, I never saw it coming. Thaddeus scooped Evadne off her feet, settling on the couch with her in his lap, his hand resting gently on her stomach, massaging. 

Remembering their earlier confrontation, his gaze darkened. 

If she had been at a disadvantage, he couldn’t bear the thought.

Evadne wrapped her arms around his neck, her warm breath teasing his skin, igniting the embers of his desire, “The Bright family’s audacity comes from their recent momentum. They’ve spearheaded a few medical research projects, and there’s talk of a breakthrough drug for Parkinson’s almost ready If they succeed, Bright Biopharmacy won’t just lead the country, they could become a global pharmaceutical powerhouse. The wealth that would generate is unimaginable. That’s why they’re so arrogant. By then, not just the Ashbourne family, but all four major families combined wouldn’t hold a candle to them.”

Thaddeus‘ lips curled into a wry smile, “Although the Abernathy Group isn’t involved in pharmaceuticals, I know that developing a drug involves countless trials and is fraught with difficulties. If the Bright Group thinks they can dominate the market, let’s see if they have the ability.” 

“And then there’s my dad. Suri has followed him for years without recognition or title. Dad must feel some guilt. That’s why the Bright family can twist that knife and send Warner to play the fool.” 

Evadne slapped her thigh in frustration, “Ah! When I think about my worrywart dad rushing back to work before he’s fully recovered, it drives me crazy. He doesn’t take care of himself, and there’s nothing we can do about it!” 

“Evadne, don’t worry. With Dylan by his side, your father will be fine.” 

Thaddeus pinched the soft flesh at her waist, “It’s still early. Why don’t you take nap, and when you wake up, we can go pick up your father from work, okay?” 

Evadne planted a kiss on his lips, her eyes brimming with relief and joy. 

At the K Group headquarters in Skyrim, Emeric kept up appearances, though he was far from recovered. 

But he had to show his face, to steady the troops. If not, rumors would spread, and enemies might seize the chance to strike. 

After wrapping up a board meeting at headquarters, Emeric had skipped lunch to rush back to his office for a much–needed break. 

He shrugged off his blazer and slumped onto the couch, his dress shirt soaked with cold sweat, feeling as if his energy had been siphoned off. 

“Mr. Emeric, how are you holding up? Everything alright?” Dylan burst in, water and medication in hand, ready to nurse him back to 

health. 

“Dylan, I’m afraid I’m no spring chicken anymore,” Emeric chuckled wryly at himself. 

Dylan winced, “Don’t talk like that! It’s just a flare–up. Keep taking your meds, stay on top of your treatment, and you’ll stabilize in no time. Everyone your age has their share of ailments. Mr. Barry’s practically a fixture in the hospital these days, and word has it that Jeff’s ticker hasn’t been ticking right for the better part of a year. He’s in and out of the hospital so often, he might as well have his own parking spot. Behind those well–maintained facades could be bodies not nearly as resilient as yours. Don’t give up on yourself!” 

“Barry might as well be an ancient relic, and you’re comparing me to him?” Emeric’s brows furrowed. “As for Jeff, well, he had it coming.” 

Dylan offered a faint smile, choosing not to comment further. 

“I’m not being melodramatic. This last spell I had, waking up from that faint, I just don’t feel the same. My hands shake,” he said, his grip on the water glass trembling, “I should probably get my will in order.” 

Dylan’s throat tightened, “Mr. Emeric!” 

“Don’t fret. It’s like this with tycoons everywhere. At my age, it’s wise to have things prepared, just in case.” 

Emeric looked at Dylan earnestly, “Dylan, these are things I can’t discuss with my wives; they’re too kind–hearted for such matters. And I certainly can’t tell the kids. As a father, I may look like I have it all, but I’ve made my share of messes, I’m well aware of my faults. So, it’s you I trust with this.” 

Dylan, with a touch of sorrow, replied, “Mr. Emeric, you’ve told me you want to see all your kids settled and successful to hold a bundle of grandchildren.” 

“Heh, I’d need another two hundred years on this planet for the likes of Cassius, Arnold, and Aaron, not to mention that rascal of a fourth. None of them are quite living up to expectations–too caught up in work or, heaven forbid, Jesus. None of them quite hit the mark!” 

Emeric sighed again, “At least Evadne seems to be on the right track. If only…” 

His thoughts were interrupted by Dylan’s vibrating phone. After a brief conversation, Dylan’s expression darkened, “Understood.”
