Glynnis clapped a hand over her mouth; it felt like her entire worldview was shattered into smithereens! 

Sure, she was known to play the field herself, but at least she maintained a veneer of decency. 

Edith, on the other hand, had tossed all semblance of propriety out the window. Not only did she flaunt her tryst right in front of Glynnis, but she also managed to do it with a hint of bragging in her lust–filled expressions! 

And how come this trainwreck of a woman had the audacity to dream of marrying Thaddeus and becoming the lady of the Abernathy empire! 

She wasn’t even qualified to dream about him! 

Alston, on the other hand, was the scion of a well–connected family. He had some restraint, at least. With an audience, he couldn’t bring himself to act on his desires. 

“Edith, I can’t do this.” 

“Pfft! You’re useless!” 

With a look of disdain, Edith pushed him fling into the pool; her glistening form emerged from the water as she snatched a towel from the lounge chair and barely covered the essentials. 

Alston plunged back under the surface, to appease his capricious girlfriend desperately, but with Glynnis there, he dared not emerge. 

“What are you on about, Glynnis? Everyone in the Elmsworth elite knows you’re the wildest one of all. Don’t play the innocent with me,” Edith drawled while lighting up a cigarette and taking a deep drag. 

Glynnis ground her jaw with anger, but she couldn’t help admiring Edith’s nerve. 

She remembered that back in their school days, Alston was always Edith’s ever–waiting backup. And now, nearly a decade later, he was still hung up on her. 

Though the Fairhaven group was rolling in dough, their shady foundations made them pariahs in political circles. 

But if Edith could snag a connection to the Bartleys, with their clout, the Fairhavens would have an inroad to politics, and their business would also grow. 

“Please, don’t tell me you dragged me out here in the dead of night just to watch you two get it on,” Glynnis spat, plopping down without any pretense of politeness.

Glynnis couldn’t hide her schadenfreude as she spoke, and her voice was dripping with malice, “Now that Marilla’s ‘condition‘ is open to the public, her disgrace is all over the internet. Not just the Fairhavens, but every reputable family in Elmsworth will shun a woman with her issues. She’s damaged goods now. My father cares too much about his dignity to let an Abernathy marry into ridicule. They’ll probably keep her hidden away for life!” 

As Glynnis laughed, she thought of how Elspeth had pinned all her hopes on Marilla. 

If Elspeth could see now that Marilla would never have a happy marriage, would she turn in her grave, or come back to haunt her?

“Who said no one wants her? I’ve just lined up a splendid match for her.” 

Edith’s smoky gaze landed on Alston, “Alston, you better make me proud and marry Marilla soon.” 

Glynnis stared at Alston in disbelief, her eyes widened in shock.

Alston’s marrying Marilla?!

“That’s why you have to insist that she’s the only one for you. Moreover, you need to convince them that the benefits of an alliance with the Abernathy outweigh the drawbacks.” 

Edith had the insight as someone raised in the lap of luxury, “If you become Frederic’s son–in–law, your father’s political ambitions would be a breeze. And the election funding? Just child’s play. Alston’s gaze was full of adoration, though he muttered reluctantly. “But it’s you whom I truly love.” 

“Come on. She’s a simpleton; Just marry her and just keep her as a showpiece at home. What harm could she do?” 

Edith leaned in and toyed with his chin with a mocking attitude, “And nothing would change between us. You’ll still have me.” 

Alston, utterly enchanted by her, almost forgot his nakedness and rose from the water to envelop Edith in a messy, passionate kiss. 

Glynnis felt her skin crawl os realization downed. 

Only by marrying Marilla off to someone of stature, someone even the Fairhavens would defer to like the Bartleys, could Jareth’s hopes be permanently dashed! 

Edith’s plan was diabolical, inhuman even! 

No wonder Elspeth used to warn her that Edith was not to be underestimated. She was a snake and a master manipulator!
