Mr. and Mrs. Abernathy retired to their quarters, where Thaddeus divulged everything he knew about Edith and Glynnis to Evadne. 

He could have easily kept it all to himself and dealt with the matter in private. 

But that was no longer an option for him–under the thumb of his wife, he knew that omission equaled treason in her eyes. To incur her wrath was a fate he dared not tempt. 

A woman like Evadne was not easily placated, and the thought of enduring weeks without her touch was a 

torment too bitter to bear. 

Evadne listened in silence, with her striking eyes narrowing and a dangerous glint flickering within that sent shivers down one’s spine. 

“So it seemed that’s why Marilla endured such torment; her own sister Glynnis played a pivotal role in her suffering,” she mused coldly.

Winced at the sound, Thaddeus quickly took her hand to inspect for any cuts and gently soothed her within his larger palm. “Evadne, anger is a poison. It’s not worth hurting yourself over such trash,” he soothed. 

“It’s like we’ve got a six–fingered mutation on our hands with Glynnis,” he muttered under his breath, with his tone turning dark. 

Her usually sweet voice turned raspy with fury, “How can two siblings be so different? When Elspeth went to great lengths with her schemes during her pregnancy, surely Mr. Frederic demanded a paternity test? Is she truly an Abernathy?* 

Thaddeus‘ gaze darkened as he replied softly, “A paternity test was done back then. It confirmed Glynnis is indeed Frederic’s child.” 

“Have you never seen a TV show? Anyone can fake the tests by buying off the doctors. If Elspeth could hide a murder for twenty years, what’s a paternity test to her?” 

Evadne’s mind was racing; it was spinning tales darker and deeper with each passing moment. 

Thaddeus‘ expression grew solemn, but his strong fingers silently slipped under the collar of her blouse, caressing the soft skin at the nape of her neck, which was a silent solace for his troubled thoughts. 

He wasn’t impatient, nor did he consider her fears as unfounded.

“But, we need a plan that’ll hurt her without backfiring on us.” 

“Evadne, you just do what you must, don’t worry about the Abernathy group. I’ve got our backs,” Thaddeus said, his eyes burning with resolve 

Evadne shook her head, “If Glynnis‘ secrets come to light, the Abernathy group could face the same fate as the Chambers Group. And it’s not just about you–it’s about Grandfather’s legacy. Despite everything, she is his granddaughter, and even if his heart has turned cold towards her, we must consider how he’d feel

The Abernathys, like any old family, valued blood ties, and with Grandfather Hamilton’s age and recent stress over Marilla’s ordeal, they couldn’t afford another blow. 

“The best outcome would be for her to confess on her own. But we’ll need the right bait,” she mused, with a cold laughter echoing in her eyes, full of dark promises. “Right now, she believes she’s won a great victory and is probably on cloud nine. Let’s add a little more excitement to her life.” 

Knowing your enemy made all the difference; just as Evadne had predicted Avery’s hasty actions against Byron she now anticipated Glynnis‘ arrogant complacency. 

While the Abernathy household was fraught with worry over Marilla, Glynnis continued her hedonistic ways, flitting from one party to the next, drowning in alcohol, and using her sister’s suffering as fodder for gossip among her fair–weather friends. 

Taking pleasure in the pain of a family member was her way of venting long–suppressed rage. 

Since Elspeth’s death, Glynnis had been cautious, but her recent alliance with Edith had emboldened her. Without Elspeth, she’d found she could still wield power among her circle and manipulate them as she pleased. 

That night, in a debauched VIP room, Glynnis danced provocatively with a striking male model. The surrounding crowd egged them on, and under the influence of alcohol, she lost all inhibitions and engaged in lewd acts with a stranger. 

In the chaos, the male model pulled her into the bathroom.

Time passed, and the room emptied. The man zipped up his pants and left the bathroom. 

There lay Glynnis, the heiress, slumped over a filthy toilet, drooling, with a smile contorting her face–more a fool than any fool could be. 

Disgusted by the scene, the man stepped back into the room, where another figure sat calmly on the sofa, who was dressed impeccably and exuding a cool elegance. 

“Mr. Jason, the task you set for me was done,” said the male model with a respectful hustle in his step as he approached. 

“You’ve been through a lot by dealing with such a messy job, Jason said, looking up with a slight curve of his lips 

“It was nothing, hardly a chore.” 

“I’ve received the photos and the video.” 

Jason slid a bank card across the table toward him. “There’s the agreed one million in there. Plus, I’ve added an extra half a mil for your troubles. I hope it helps you get back on your feet.” 

The man paused for a while before he picked up the card with a self–deprecating chuckle. “If I ever beat this sickness, it’ll be a medical miracle. Don’t worry, I’ll be on the first flight out of Elmsworth tomorrow morning and you won’t see me again.
