The next day, Chasel came alone to Evadne’s villa to see the couple.

“Chasel, where’s my brother?”

Evadne greeted him as they settled into the cozy living room, while Thaddeus came in with a plate of freshly cut fruit slices, playing the perfect host.

“Cassius is back home looking after Dad and packing up; we’re heading back to M Country in a couple of days.”

Chasel’s use of “Dad” sounded so smooth and natural, a soft tenderness twinkling in his eyes.

Evadne watched him intently, her mind racing back to a hidden photograph her brother had once stashed away. She wondered if it had been destroyed by now, and she still felt uneasy about it.

“Evadne, I came here because the results from the drug analysis are in,” Chasel said, his tone serious as he handed over the documents.

Evadne eagerly tore open the brown paper envelope, with Thaddeus leaning in close beside her.

“This is quite a complex mixture,” she murmured, her experience as a surgeon giving her only a superficial understanding.

Thaddeus found it even difficult. “Is this really medicine, not some illicit drug?”

“It’s medicine. I’ve checked the components. It’s mostly antidepressants and antipsychotics, used to control psychiatric symptoms,” Chasel explained with a grave expression.

Thaddeus frowned deeply. “If it’s legitimately medicine, even if we catch Avery red-handed, he could still find a way to wriggle out of it. The penalties for drug trafficking and distributing unauthorized medicine are worlds apart.”

“But we have no evidence,” Chasel said, frustrated and helpless. “You have no evidence that those so-called ‘addicts’ are human test subjects, nor any evidence to prove Avery’s involvement. What can we do?”
