Miranda had no idea Carter was waiting for her at home.

Jo had left her a voicemail, but she hadn't gotten around to checking it yet.

Stretching with a yawn, Miranda glanced over at Susie, who was already fast asleep.

Sebastian came in carrying a tray of food.

"Tired?" he asked.

Miranda was a bit surprised to see Sebastian himself bringing it over.

"Aren't you too important to be delivering meals personally?"

Sebastian chuckled and set the tray on the small table beside her.

The food was just the way Miranda liked it, another surprise.

"This is all my favorite stuff. Did you look it up online?"

"We had dinner together once, back in Zephra," he replied.

Miranda remembered. Elian had been there too.

Sebastian continued casually, "I just paid attention to what you liked."

Miranda nodded, appreciative. "Thanks for that."

She didn't interact much with Sebastian, and he never overstepped any boundaries. He always maintained a gentlemanly demeanor around her, so she never thought he had any ulterior motives.

Miranda was perceptive enough to sense that Sebastian had a darker side hidden beneath the surface—a side not visible to the world or even to her. But his secrets weren’t her concern. She took people as they presented themselves, and she wasn’t one to pry into others' lives. If someone harbored ill intentions, she was confident in her ability to handle it. Thus, she didn't dwell too much on Sebastian.

At least from what he showed her, their interactions were amicable enough.

Hearing her thanks, Sebastian smiled slightly. "I’d rather you didn’t say thank you."

Miranda picked up her fork. "What should I say then?"

Sebastian didn’t reply, and Miranda began eating.

Sebastian watched quietly as Miranda ate. The room was silent, her eating barely making a sound, amplifying the quietness.

She looked at Sebastian. "Do you want her to live a few years as a normal person, or a lifetime as something else?"

Sebastian asked, "Is there another option?"

Miranda replied, "I can teach her to control the curse so she won’t accidentally harm others. I can also seal the toxin within her. But her mind won’t recover; the damage to her brain is irreversible. Though she might grow, the chances are slim."

The brain, once damaged, couldn’t always be mended. Even with treatment, there was no guarantee of recovery.

As Susie’s brother, Sebastian had to weigh in on the decision. Miranda had figured out the situation and knew what needed to be done.

Sebastian looked at Susie lying on the bed. "If her life ends quickly, then what was the point of these years?"

Miranda understood his sentiment and glanced at Susie as well. "Got it."

"And I’ll need extra compensation."

Sebastian raised an eyebrow.

"Alright," he agreed.
