JESS

The stadium erupted into cheers as the final whistle blew, signaling Luke’s team had won. I jumped to my feet, clapping and screaming along with the rest of the people around me. I knew Josh’s team had lost and that he was probably crushed, but right now, I was happy–like screaming my lungs out.

I tried my best to see if I could spot Josh or Luke. Shit, maybe they were angry with each other. That would make dinner tonight awkward.

Finally, I spotted Luke and Josh, and instead of a showdown, they were hugging it out, slapping each other on the back with grins that could light up the night sky. A wave of relief crashed over me. They were good. Well, of course, they would be. They were like brothers. I still had to make sure I gave Josh a piece of my mind for cheating on Laura. Tonight was my only chance, and I didn’t care that he had lost.

After everyone filtered off, I made my way to the area Luke had told me about and flashed my pass at a few security guards, who were nice enough to show me where to go.

I thought he said it was the locker room, but when I walked in, it kind of looked like an airport lounge. I grabbed a soda and moved into a corner where I could wait and be invisible at the same time.

some gala. My jeans and cropped T–shirt didn’t blend in well, but I didn’t care. I sat down on the couch, hiding behind a curtain, pulling out my phone.

There was another message from Aiden.

Aiden: Jess. I haven’t heard from you in two days. Just let me know you are safe. ‘WORRIED asshole over here.’

Jess: Safe. Now go bother some other poor innocent girl.

Aiden: You are not innocent, honey. Wink.

“Ugh. Idiot,” I groaned, not responding this time. He knew I was alive. That was enough.

I caught a few girls behind me whispering and giggling, and I eavesdropped out of pure boredom.

“How long before Luke’s single do you think?” one said, a snicker slipping through her lips. My insides twisted, and I fought the urge to eavesdrop, but I was glued to the spot, straining to hear more.

“I know, right? My friend would be perfect for him. He’s a little young, but I bet you that doesn’t translate between the sheets,” the other replied, her voice oozing with entitled confidence that made my skin crawl.

I tightened my grip on the soda can, feeling anger flare within me. But it only got worse.

“I missed you,” Luke breathed me in, and I shimmied down his body. We are getting way too much attention, “I whispered, and Luke didn’t bother looking up. He took my hand and flung his bag over his shoulder. Let’s go. Osh is meeting us at the club,” he said, and I paused.

“Club? I thought we were having dinner,” I asked, and Luke
