CHAPTER 31

JESS

It’s been a week–one whole week–and Luke hasn’t

acknowledged my presence. In fact, I usually get ignored, but now I get avoided like I carry the bubonic plague or something.

“Laura, pssst,” I whispered to Laura and pulled her from her locker into the bathroom.

“Look. I know this goes beyond friendship rules, but…” I whispered as I shut the door, but someone bumped me from the other side.

“Hey! What are you guys ‘doing in here without me?” Sam whined, and she stumbled into the bathroom after us.

“Sam. Shhh.” I shushed her, and she made a motion to zip her lips.

My heart sank. This was the last thing I needed.

Sam and Laura both cursed under their breaths, exchanging worried glances.

“Well, well, well,” Tiffany said, a smirk playing on her lips. “Isn’t this interesting? Jess and Luke, huh?”

I felt my face heat up, panic rising in my chest. “Tiffany, this is none of your business.”

“Oh, but it is,” she said, her tone dripping with false sweetness.

“Luke is a very, very close friend of mine and a lie this about
