CHAPTER 39
I woke up with Jess in my arms, her head resting gently on my chest. The warmth of her body and the rhythmic rise and fall of her breaths were comforting, making me want to stay in this moment forever. But the loud buzzing of my phone shattered the peace.
I groaned internally.
Who the fuck would that be?
It’s Sunday.
Carefully, I slid out from underneath Jess, trying not to wake her. She mumbled something incoherent and shifted but remained asleep. I grabbed my phone from the table and saw Josh’s name on the screen. My heart raced.
“Hey, man, it’s the ass–crack of dawn,” I answered, faking a yawn, moving to the kitchen as fast as possible.
“Luke, did Jess come home last night? She never showed up,” Josh’s voice was tinged with worry.
I glanced back at Jess, still sleeping soundly on the couch. Panic surged through me, but I quickly composed myself. Covering the phone, I muttered, “Yeah, man. She drove me. home. My shoulder got hit pretty badly. Saw you and Laura were home when we stopped and thought you might want a night alone, so I let her crash on the couch.”
There was a pause on the other end. I held my breath, praying
Wher
Josh wouldn’t ask too many questions.
“You sure she’s okay?” Josh finally asked again, but he sounded distracted.
“Yeah, she’s fine. Still passed out, man, but I’ll tell her you were looking for her,”
“Good, bro. I trust you,” Josh said, chuckling nervously.
“Imagine, bro. I’d have to kill you if you try and hook up with my sister.”
“Nah, man, you know Jessica is as much my sister as she is yours. I’d never see her that way,” I said, the words tasting like acid as they left my mouth.
Josh chuckled. “Yeah, I know, man.”
Josh dropped the phone, and my stomach churned, making me feel nauseous the minute the words left my mouth. I pinched the bridge of my nose and tried to steady myself with a breath, but movement caught my eye; it was Jess, wrapped in a blanket, standing at the entrance of the kitchen, tears running down her beautiful cheeks.
I stepped forward, but I didn’t know what I would even say. I saw it on her face, the court. I’d just fucking crushed her after what we shared last night.
I reached out, but she took another step back, shaking her head. “This is done now. If you see me, ignore me and even more than that, get rid of your delusional urge to protect me. I will be dating, and I’m starting with Tom.” Jessica’s voice had a bite to it. She was hurt. I could understand that. “If you think I’m going to let Tom…“I growled in a warning, but Jessica stepped
forward, clutching the blanket.

CHAPTER 30
“I think you are going to leave me the hell alone! And yes, you will let Tom touch me in any way want it, and you won’t stop him from dating me. Clearly, you are scared to tell my brother you almost fucked his sister, and there’s probably a reason for that. One I don’t know or fucking care about, to be frank, but I will tell him if you don’t back off.”
“Jess, please,” I tried again, but she turned and walked away, leaving me standing there, feeling more lost than ever. My fist hit the wall before I realized what happened.
Fuck.
