CHAPTER 42
JESS
I sat down next to him, keeping a safe distance between us. “Go on,” I said, crossing my arms and looking away.
Luke cleared his throat, looking a little lost for words. “What happened on the couch, I didn’t… I lost control, okay?”
“So it was a mistake,” I said bitterly.
“No, that’s not–this is not how this was supposed to go,” Luke groaned, frustration stinging his voice.
“How was it supposed to go? Enlighten me?” I said a little cold but I was hurt… again.
“Look, I can’t go there with you even though you make it so fucking hard not to. I promised your brother. I can’t break that promise. He’s done a lot for me, and I owe him that much. All he asked was that I keep my hands off his sister. You’re just making it really fucking impossible,” Luke said, his eyes focused on the ground rather than me.
A small part of me also clung to the part where he said I was making it hard for him, which meant he did want me. As much as I wanted to act like I didn’t want him, I did. I think I always have, but I just refused to acknowledge it.
“Oh, so this is my fault then,” I retorted, and I knew it was childish, but too late now to say it.

Luke laughed à bitter sound that cut through the tension. “Yes, it’s your fault. Your face, your lips, the curve of your back, those. long, beautifully tanned legs,” Luke then looked at me suddenly, and I felt like he could see straight into my head, “How soft your lips feel, how smooth your skin is, how good you taste, all of it is your fault. You were never supposed to become this, this…” He waved his hands over me, and I could see heat in his eyes, hunger, and it made my throat go dry and heat pool between my thighs. I rubbed my legs together trying to get rid of the need.
I couldn’t help the blush that crept up my cheeks. I rubbed the back of my neck, unsure of what to say. Or maybe I knew exactly what to say but didn’t want to admit it. I didn’t want to acknowledge how I really felt about Luke. The 6’4” linebacker who looked like sex on a stick and seemed to have walked straight out of those ridiculous mafia boss romance novels.
Luke’s eyes were hooded, and I felt my own breath hitch in my throat. Our fingers were inches away from touching, and I stared at him, his eyes, and his mouth. Luke was leaning in, and I felt my body do the same.
“Jessica,” Luke whispered my name, sending chills up and down my spine. His hand glided over my cheek, and his fingers curled into my hair, pulling me closer. “We shouldn’t…” Luke said again, this time barely audible, and I nodded in agreement even thought my body was saying something different.
A light flickered on in Luke’s house, and I noticed him tense immediately – the moment gone. “Your parents are up late,” I said, but Luke’s expression hardened, and he ground his teeth.

“Everything okay?” I asked, touching his hand instinctively. He pulled it away, his face growing colder.
I took advantage of his distraction and started walking away before he could say anything else. Each step felt like I was

walking through quicksand, my heart pounding with anger and hurt.
As I reached the edge of the yard, I glanced back and saw Luke was gone.
