CHAPTER 35
JESS
I trailed awkwardly behind Luke, feeling the tension coil in my stomach like a spring ready to snap. As we approached his truck, I could feel Tom’s eyes on me. When I turned to look, he was watching us, none the wiser about what really was happening right now.
This was Luke – being a jealous asshole, and a small part of me might like it.
He lifted his hand to wave, and my heart sank a little. Before I could wave back, Luke cleared his throat, reminding me he was waiting.
I shot him a glare, hoping he could feel the heat of my frustration. He stood there, expression unreadable, jaw clenched. With a huff, I yanked open the passenger door and climbed in.
The truck felt huge around me, but I was used to it. After all, I’d driven Josh’s pickup countless times to rescue him and Luke from parties when they were too drunk to drive.
Silence settled in the cab as I settled into the seat and buckled my seatbelt. I started the engine, and the roar filled the silence.
We pulled out of the parking lot, and I focused on the road. ahead, trying to ignore the presence of the guy next to me, who seemed to be at the center of my every confusing emotion.

“Why did you do that?” I asked, breaking the silence that felt like it was suffocating me.
“Do what?” Luke replied, not looking at me.
“You know what,” I snapped. “Why did you insist on me driving. you home? Your shoulder seems fine.”
Luke’s jaw tightened. “Because you’re not his responsibility,” he said, his voice firm.
“Oh, and I’m yours?” I shot back, my irritation spiking.
His eyes flicked to me briefly before returning to the road. “In a way, yeah. You’re Josh’s sister. That makes you my
responsibility, too.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. “That’s bullshit, Luke, and you know it. Tom is perfectly safe, so this was not because of some delusion or sense of loyalty to my brother. I’m not a child. I can take care of myself.”
I couldn’t make out the rest of the discussion, but when he ended the call, there was something heavy on his shoulders. Suddenly, Luke hit the dashboard with his fist. “Fucking asshole!“. It was out of nowhere, and my soul almost left my body as I slammed on the brakes.
We sat like that for a second. I was breathing hard, and Luke was holding an arm across my chest, making sure I didn’t hit the steering wheel as the truck screeched to a stop.
“Sorry,” I whispered, and Luke pulled his arm away from me. I knew something was wrong, but I also knew he wouldn’t say anything to me.

Before I could stop myself, I reached out and laced my fingers into his. He didn’t respond instantly, but when he realized I wasn’t going to pull my hand away, I felt him close his hand over mine, swallowing my hand.
We sat like that, on the side of the road, watching the sunset over the fields.
“I’m going to need that to drive,” I wiggled the arm attached to the hand that Luke was clutching. Yeah, right.” Luke suddenly sat back and let go of me. I opened and closed my fingers, willing blood to flow back into them before pulling away.
