Mitch led the way and the others followed behind him. They followed the directions on the map and began heading into the Vicente Primeval Forest. They did not run into the bloodsucking bugs, and the whole journey went rather smoothly.
Vernon looked at the map excitedly. "Unbelievable! We've made a new record! We're sixty kilometers deep in the forest now!"
"That's it, right up ahead!"
Vernon pointed at a grassy plain in front of him. Everyone hurried over and began clearing the plain of all the grass with the tools they had prepared. After that, they began to dig up the soil with shovels. Soon enough, they uncovered the round cover of a well.
The cover of the well was different from those found in the city. It looked ancient and was extremely heavy. No one could lift it with their own strength.
Wilbur wove the rope he had brought through the hole on top of the cover, tying a firm knot. Everyone picked up the rope and pulled it together and were finally able to lift the stone cover off. Upon doing so, everyone saw that the stone cover was actually almost twenty centimeters thick.
Vernon squatted down, examining the cover with a frown. "What's this? Why is there a huge stone lid here?"
Captain Mitch was practically boring holes into the stone cover with his stare. "This should probably be where the treasure is at. Come on, let's get down there to look."
Wilbur looked at Aite, who scrambled to say, "Alright, Captain Mitch, I'll lead the way now since you were doing it just now."
Just then, Vernon came up to what looked like a crystal lightbulb. He inspected it closely before saying, "No, this isn't an electrical light. It's a special underwater crystal. This crystal was found in the Vicente Forest a few decades ago, but the mine was sealed for some reason eventually. It's been said that this crystal's harder than any machine humanity has ever encountered, and thus it couldn't be worked on. Also, the technology at the time was hardly advanced enough to estimate the value of the crystal. So, they chose to seal the mine to keep its value."
Vernon frowned as he spoke as if he was deep in thought.
Kean said, "Why would these crystal lights exist if they're too hard to work on?"
Vernon said, "Maybe someone found a way to do it, some way that no one else knows about. According to the notes I found, these crystals emit a glow all day and night. That's why they're worth so much."
