As her mind started to clear, Roseanne quickly began to replay the events in her head.

She remembered the headlights suddenly flashing on, shining directly at her and momentarily blinding her.

In a panic, she instinctively slammed on the brakes.

She heard a loud crash...

But she was certain she'd hit an object, not a person.

But why was there something there?

When the headlights came on, her view of the road had been clear, and she was sure there had been no obstacles.

Logically, she should have continued straight without hitting anything.

Unless...

Unless that thing had appeared out of nowhere!

Setting aside supernatural explanations, that left only one option: someone had put it there.

Roseanne sat in her car for a full three minutes, waiting for someone or something to appear.

Nothing.

She frowned. Had she been wrong?

After another two minutes passed with no sign of life, she made the decision to get out and take a look.

Before stepping out, she grabbed her phone. Then, hesitating for a moment, she also reached into the glove box and took out a small folding knife. It was tiny, just fitting in her palm.

Stepping out of the car, she first scanned her surroundings and noticed that two streetlights overhead were out, making this stretch of road much darker than the others.

Then she bent down to inspect the front of her car and saw a fist-sized scrape.

Looking over at what she'd hit: a square metal box.

The box was rusty, with welding marks visible, and had a few dents from the impact, though it looked like they'd been adjusted, making them less obvious.

Roseanne was baffled.

A metal box in the middle of the road at night?

All three had similar features, suggesting they were related, possibly a father and his sons.

The one blocking her door was tall and as thin as a rake.

He sneered at her. "You think you can just drive off after wrecking something? Not so fast!"

"Exactly!" chimed in the other middle-aged man, his physique the complete opposite, stout and heavyset with jowls to match.

The two exchanged glances before turning their attention to the old man.

The elder seemed to suddenly realize something and dramatically threw himself to the ground in front of the car, clutching the metal box. "Oh, dear Lord! I've failed my forefathers, letting the family heirloom be destroyed. How can I face my departed parents? I must end it all!"

"Dad, don't do this—"

"It wasn't your fault, why should you pay the price?"

The heavier man rushed forward to steady the trembling older man.

Meanwhile, the thin man maintained his hold on the car door, giving Roseanne no chance to get back inside.

"Blame her! It was her driving that ruined our family heirloom! She has to pay up!"
