When the two arrived at the hospital, Olivia was perched on the windowsill on the eighth floor, her oversized hospital gown fluttering in the wind. She refused to come down, ignoring the pleas of the anxious doctors and nurses.
"Olivia, don't be impulsive. Tell Ethan what's wrong, I'll definitely help you."
Olivia blinked her tearful eyes, "I feel like a burden. My parents don't want me, I have no home, no one cares about me, no one loves me. It's so painful to be alive, wouldn't I be free if I die?"
"How could that be? We care about you, we love you!" Aaron shouted, afraid that she wouldn't hear him if he spoke softly.
"But you both have wives. When you're in danger, you'll always choose them first." She bit her lip, her eyes red with tears. "I should just die, so Stella and Emma won't keep sending me messages calling me a shameless mistress."
Aaron gritted his teeth angrily, "Don't listen to them, you're always the most important in our hearts, no one can compare."
To prove his words, Aaron took off a safety charm from his neck without hesitation, "This is the life-saving charm that Emma knelt for 3,000 steps to get for me. I've been wearing it close to my heart for five years."
He gritted his teeth and suddenly tore it apart, throwing it out the window, "See, Aaron never lies to you, you're always more important than Emma."
Emma trembled with anger, her swollen eyes filled with tears again.
A few years ago, Aaron was stabbed twice by the family of a defendant he had defeated in court and almost died. Emma, who never believed in gods or Buddhas, knelt for 3,000 steps, accidentally rolling down the steps and injuring her collarbone, leaving a deep scar, just to get a life-saving charm.
Later, when Aaron really woke up, he wore it close to his heart.
Something that was once treated like a treasure was now not even considered trash in Olivia's eyes.
I hugged my distraught best friend, and the next second, I saw Ethan take out my wedding ring, which I had taken off because of my swollen fingers during pregnancy.
He handed it to Olivia without hesitation, "Olivia, I'll give you a home. You're not a mistress, you'll be my wife."
The tenderness in his dark eyes was as bright as the stars, but it no longer reflected me.
The scene was as familiar as it was back then. He knelt down on one knee and made a sincere promise, "I'll divorce Stella and marry you. Will you marry me?"
Olivia blinked her innocent eyes and said pitifully, "But Stella won't agree."
"Don't worry about her, in my heart, you're my only wife."
Olivia burst into tears of joy and climbed down from the windowsill, throwing herself into Ethan's arms.
They hugged tightly, like weary birds returning to their nest after a long journey.
"Stella..."
Emma hugged me tightly, her voice choked with sobs, "Let's not watch anymore, okay?"
I twitched the corners of my mouth, trying to smile, but tears streamed down my face uncontrollably.
Everyone in the ward breathed a sigh of relief. The doctors and nurses applauded the happy scene and offered their congratulations.
In the warm and romantic proposal scene, a hurried figure rushed in abruptly.
It was Ethan's assistant.
He panted, looked at Ethan who was hugging Olivia, his lips pale, and said with a trembling voice, "Ethan, the DNA test results of the bodies are out, it's, it's Stella."
Ethan turned his head away, as if he hadn't heard what he said, and repeated, "What Stella? Which Stella?"
He stopped abruptly.
He had personally examined my left hand, every finger was broken, every finger was different from others.
"Wrong! It's all wrong!" He stared blankly at his hands, then clutched his chest in pain and suddenly spat out a mouthful of blood.
The doctors rushed forward in a panic.
Aaron frantically grabbed the assistant, his mouth opening and closing several times before he managed to squeeze out a hoarse voice, "One of the bodies is Stella's, what about the other one? It's not Emma, right?"
The assistant looked at him with pity, and after a long time, he said in a heavy voice, "Aaron, my condolences."
"Impossible, I don't believe it."
Aaron roared, turned his head and snatched the report from Olivia's hand. He used so much force that he pushed Olivia, causing her to stumble, but he didn't notice.
He flipped to the next page with trembling hands.
Emma's name came into view, and his whole body stiffened, even his jaw trembled.
He staggered back two steps in a daze, knocking over the medical rack behind him. Scalpels, medical scissors, and medicine bottles crashed to the ground. Some of them scraped against his skin, causing blood to flow out, but he was like a robot that couldn't feel pain. He numbly touched his neck, the empty feeling making him feel cold all over.
He looked out the window, his eyes gradually reddening, muttering, "Safety charm, my safety charm..."
Suddenly, he rushed downstairs like a madman.
