Chapter 271

Mr. Holland couldn’t understand Lyle’s actions.

If it was for money, all Lyle had to do was wait a little longer. The patents for our research project had been applied under our team’s name. So, once it went global, everyone in the research team would become rich beyond measure. Thus, Lyle wouldn’t be lacking in money.

Hypothetically, even if he desperately needed it, I was around. I was obscenely wealthy and considered the lab as my second home. As such, I had always been more than willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in the lab who needed funds.

Mr. Holland couldn’t make sense of what had happened.

Why had Lyle done such a thing? What had pushed him to go to ste selfdestructive lengths just to destroy me and ruin Mr. Holland?

He couldn’t come to terms with what Lyle had done. He couldn’t accept that a student so close to him had betrayed and slandered him. As a result, he collapsed.

I watched over him as he lay in the hospital bed. Mr. Holland looked as though his life had been drained from him. Additionally, he also looked as though he had aged several years in an instant.

My hands clenched into tight fists by my side.

People could come after me as much as they wanted. However, I wouldn’t allow anyone to ruin Mr. Holland’s pristine reputation!

He had dedicated his entire life to scientific research. He had sacrificed his sleep and a life of marital bliss for it. Then, after becoming a lecturer, he poured all his energy into educating his students and never sought to gain anything from them. Not only that, he also helped anyone in need if he could.

As such, Mr. Holland should be above slanderno one had the right to debase him.

After troubling my other teammates to look after Mr. Holland, I went to the hospital where Lyle had been admitted.

Lyle was still in a coma. I wasn’t sure if it was because his injury was truly severe or if he was merely trying to put on a compelling act. After confirming with his doctor that his life wasn’t in danger, I went up to the hospital’s rooftop.

It was late autumn in Lestoria, so the wind had grown cold. It bit into me as I was dressed thinly.

Walking over to the edge, I gazed down below.

The hospital’s rooftop was quite high upit was almost the same height as Hurley University’s teaching building.

I had met Shaun on our campus rooftop seven years ago. It had been a late autumn night too when I saw him standing on the edge and gripping the railing. He had been staring blankly down below, looking as though he had lost the will to live.

Thinking he was about to jump, I had rushed over to him in a panic just like he did now.

Shaun had come up to the hospital’s rooftop and saw me leaning over the railing. I was staring downward just as he had done. Thus, he had rushed over to me, thinking that I was about to jump

Don’t be rash, Emi. I know your situation seems bleak right now, but there’s still hope if you stay alive. So please don’t be too hasty!Shaun pleaded.

He sounded genuinely anxious and worried for me. His concern seemed heartfelt, and his presence felt reassuringas it always did. He seemed like such a good person, yet

Why?I questioned, turning to him with a puzzled gaze.

Shaun was taken aback, and his expression became tense.

He was an intelligent man. We had also become quite familiar with each other after two years of frequent academic discussions.

He could immediately tell what I was asking. Yet, he pretended no to and decided to play dumb.
