After discovering their hypnosis attempts had failed, Grace had started thinking about how to make Irvin willingly stay. She had also tried to figure out how to convince him to assume Timothy’s identity and play her husband.
Grace needed him to do so so that she could keep her status as a Hardwell.
While she did say all those things to garner William’s sympathy, the things she said were also all true.
She was born into a prestigious family in Lestoria–one that was second only to the Hardwells. However, Grace’s father had brought his mistress home after her mother had passed away.
Then, once this mistress became her stepmother, Grace could no longer call her house her home. Additionally, her brother had died because of her stepmother.
Grace had to keep her status as a Hardwell for her and her brother’s sake. She needed to do so to seize back everything that rightfully belonged to them. That was why she was adamant on remaining as Mrs. Hardwell.
While she was racking her brain to come up with something, she had undergone a major fetal malformation examination, which revealed her baby had a heart defect.
The Hardwells were wealthy enough to raise a child like this without difficulty, but it was uncertain whether the child could live to adulthood, let alone become the next Hardwell heir.
Plus, the child wasn’t Irvin’s. So once Irvin had full authority in the Hardwell family, he definitely wouldn’t let Grace’s child inherit it.
As such, she concluded that she couldn’t rely on her child. Not only that, the child had also become a burden. When she decided not to keep the child, she had come up with this plan.
“You haven’t been in Lestoria recently, Mr. Ashford,” Grace said, “but I’m sure you’re aware Emilia Quill and Irvin Sawyer have been getting along very well these past few days. They may even get back together if they continue like this.
“And if Emilia remarries Irvin, do you think your nephew could accept that?” she argued.
Then, she offered, “I’m willing to take the fall for what happened, Mr. Ashford, and your nephew will benefit from it too. So, I really feel you don’t need to interfere in this.”
William stared contemplatively at Grace for a long moment. Then, without saying a word, he left.
Grace sighed in relief after he did. Her whole body went limp as she was drained of all her strength.
Despite her calm exterior, inwardly she was a nervous wreck. She was so terrified that she would ruin everything if she made the wrong move.
She rested for a long while before she finally recovered. Then, a wave of sorrow washed over her.
Despite being owed a life–saving favor, Grace still had to work hard just to convince William not to interfere.
He was a powerful figure. Yet, I didn’t need to do anything for him to side with and protect me.
I clearly wasn’t better than Grace, so she wondered why I was so blessed and lucky.
Irvin had always been a brilliant and capable person. Plus, the current Hardwell head, Magnus, strongly supported him and gave him free reign. Because of this, he had already built up some influence with the Hardwell family.
