Chapter 42
Seeing Julianne sit upright and distance herself from him, flicker of disappointment flashed through Travis‘
eyes.
“I looked into it, but found nothing. Her injuries were so severe she couldn’t even get out of bed. She probably couldn’t have done anything anyway. Honestly, I think she was just badly hurt and yet never once visited by Mr. Sawyer, so she probably gave up.”
Travis saw me as a brainless fool, someone far too useless to pull off anything strategic.
Julianne’s eyes darkened. She knew I had been seriously injured, completely incapable of doing anything. However, no matter how badly hurt or heartbroken I was, she believed I loved Irvin as deeply as she did. I shouldn’t have been able to let go so easily!
She thought that something was definitely off. Something must have happened during my hospital stay!
She refused to believe that I had genuinely given up on Irvin. Instead, she suspected I was quietly scheming something.
Julianne had instructed Travis to dig deeper into my hospitalization. Yet he had found nothing!
“Mr. Walker, I went to great lengths to convince Irvin to keep you around, yet you came back empty–handed.”
Before he could respond, she softened her tone.
“She’s already barely tolerating your existence, and if you can’t even figure out what she’s planning, I won’t be able to protect you next time. Think carefully–can you really afford to lose this high–paying job?”
Travis‘ face darkened immediately. He looked down on me, thinking I was insignificant and brainless. The thought that I had the audacity to demand Irvin to fire him filled him with rage.
How dared I try to ruin his life! I clearly didn’t know my place.
He believed that if I didn’t get a proper lesson, I would never understand how severe the consequences were.
“Ms. Lianne, don’t worry,” he said. “Whether she’s genuinely given up or scheming something, she won’t cause any trouble. I won’t let her affect your relationship with Mr. Sawyer, and she’ll never have the chance to get me fired again!” $1
The vicious glint in his eyes made Julianne realize something. Lowering her gaze to hide the delight flickering within, she suppressed a smile.
She had thought it would take time and persuasion to manipulate him into dealing with me ruthlessly.
However, he had already had the desire to destroy me.
It didn’t matter if he couldn’t figure out what I was planning. If he could kill me, he would be the most valuable asset she had.
Irvin drove like a madman, the car speeding so fast it felt like it was about to take off. It was as if he was pouring all his anger into the accelerator.
I had no intention of letting the life I barely managed to hold onto end in a car crash.
Forcing down the urge to scream at him to go die alone if he wanted to, I softened my voice and said, “If you want to talk, let’s find a place to do it properly. Acting crazy like this–if we crash, there’ll be nothing left to talk about.”

He let out a cold laugh. “What’s this? Are you afraid of dying?
