The crying eventually attracted a patrolling police officer. After assessing the situation, the officer sternly. reprimanded the two teenagers. He warned them never to play around on the road, especially at crossroads because it was far too dangerous.
The two teenagers nodded repeatedly as they were scolded, cowering in guilt.
Although it had been a very precarious situation, I didn’t exactly get hurt. So, it was deemed an accident. Since the two teenagers were still minors, the matter was considered resolved after the police officer’s lecture.
My nerves and emotions finally settled when I arrived at the ravioli restaurant and ate a huge plate of steaming hot ravioli.
Thinking about how I had nearly missed out on this comforting meal, I couldn’t help but sigh. I felt I should make time to attend church and pray soon. This year had been unbelievably unlucky for me. My misfortune had nearly cost me my life on multiple occasions.
From falling off a cliff and barely surviving on jagged rocks to nearly drowning, then to almost being hit by a flowerpot, and now almost being struck by a car–it had been one calamity after the other.
In the 20 years or so since I came to this world, I had never experienced this much bad luck in such a short span of time.
“What’s wrong?” Shaun put down his fork and looked at me upon hearing me sigh.
I answered honestly, “I think I should find time to visit a church. I’ve been far too unlucky lately.” Shaun chuckled. “Aren’t we researchers supposed to be materialists? Do you believe in that sort of thing?”
I was momentarily speechless. I hadn’t believed in it before, but I’ve had too much bad luck this year. Upon seeing my expression, Shaun smiled again and said, “If it brings you peace of mind, it’s not a bad idea.” His already refined and handsome features became even more charming when he smiled. Against the backdrop of the snowy scenery outside the floor–to–ceiling window and the warm glow of the lights, he looked like a character straight out of a comic book.
Thinking about how he had saved my life three times now, I couldn’t help but laugh. “Shaun, I feel like I’ll never be able to repay you for saving my life in this lifetime.”
One life–saving act already constituted a debt for a lifetime, let alone three.
“It was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. Don’t dwell on it. If we went by that logic, doctors would have thousands of people owing them for saving lives every single day,” Shaun replied, as if I were overthinking it and brushed off the idea that I owed him a significant debt.
I didn’t argue further. His life–saving kindness was something I would always remember. If he ever needed my help in the future, I would do anything to repay him no matter the cost.
Still, it seemed fate had a strange way of bringing us together. Even in such a random place, we managed to r into each other.
Although I hadn’t suffered any injuries that day, the brush with death left me rattled. I’d managed to not take any sleeping pills for the past few days. But today, I had to take two to calm myself down so that I could fall asleep.
When I woke up, my first instinct was to reach for my phone to check the time.
