I distinctly felt Brandon’s body tremble. I supposed my kiss took him aback. The next second, he grabbed me by my waist. It was precisely then that my lips left his before I flashed him a soft smile. “That’s your reward for taking the needle so well.” 

As I uttered those words, I suddenly remembered the times when Chris was sick and had to receive injections. He was the most fearful of needles, which was why he would rather suffer alone than to the hospital.

To him, receiving torture. He was practically one tantrum cry away from acting like a total brat.. 

I’d had to comfort him for a long time as if I was with a kid. I’d have to cover his eyes during the injection. One time, I even let him bite my arm as the needle entered his skin. 

Hence, I felt immensely relieved as though I had completed an impossible mission every time Chris received his injection. He would even ask for rewards afterward, like me dancing, singing for him, or even buying him gifts. In other words, he became Little Chris whenever he was sick and needed an injection. 

To reiterate, Little Chris was far from likable. 

In contrast, Brandon’s injection process was effortless. I didn’t need to say or do anything to assist him. Even when the needle pricked his skin, he asked me to turn around and look away. Afraid I would be bored, he didn’t insist on my stay and suggested I take a stroll. 

Of course, comparison was the thief of joy. Now that a disparity was made, I realized I was never Chris‘ counterpart but rather a helper. 

In response to my words, Brandon tightened his grip on my waist. His voice was low and raspy. “I can’t wait to be sick again.” 

I was speechless. I knew what he meant but didn’t reply to him. Following that, I was ready to leave with 

him. 

It was then Chris‘ voice rang out.. “You got back at me. Now, we’re even, Madeline. 

I paused and turned toward him. 

His face carried a hint of anger, but his tone remained calm. He repeated, “We’re even, Maddie.” 

It was at that moment Chris enlightened me how shameless one could be. 

“You’re a nuthead, Chris!” I scolded him and left. 

Brandon’s hand remained on my waist until we exited the hospital and arrived at the parking lot. I was about to open the car door when he unexpectedly grabbed my shoulders. Then, he turned my body around and pressed me against the car. 

His gaze was soulful and sparkling. It was as if the twinkling stars in the night sky had fallen into his eyes. He didn’t say anything as he looked at me. His stare, however, made my heart feel like it was racing out of my chest. 

I knew the kiss earlier had ignited something in this man. After all, I was no fool. 

That was why I needed to make things clear.

I piped up. “Brandon, I was just trying to get over me. Don’t misunderstand.” 

Immediately, I could see that the light in Brandon’s eyes was dimming. He rubbed his eyes a little. “You

“That’s right. What else could it be? We’re not in a real relationship, anyway.” I smiled sarcastically, knowing how fake my smile was coming across. 

Brandon’s hands tightened around my shoulders. “Your acting was very convincing.” 

“Well, it had to be for Chris to buy it.” I meant it. 

I kissed Brandon because I wanted Chris to get over me completely. What I didn’t anticipate was he took it as an act of petty revenge. Not only did I waste my effort, but I also got myself into double the trouble! The most frustrating thing now was that Brandon had taken the kiss seriously. 

Still, I couldn’t get his hopes up about us. He was an honest, good man. I couldn’t drag him into this mess. 

My palm landed on his chest. I nudged him. “Don’t fall for this play.” 

Brandon’s grim expression made it hard for me to look at him. 

He didn’t release me, nor did I push him away. I was stuck in his invisible cage, and my breathing felt irregular. Just as I was ready to escape from under his arms, his low voice sounded. “If it were your blind date or any other man, would you have kissed them too?
