I remembered what I had wanted to ask Brandon yesterday. “Did they bother you again?” 

As I asked, I instinctively looked at his hands and face. Fortunately, there weren’t any injuries. 

Brandon seemed to understand my concern. “No. Even if they did, they wouldn’t be a match for me.”

After finishing the last sip of the soup. I asked, “Have you found out anything about your father’s car accident? Who was behind it? They gave you such a deadly threat.” 

Brandon looked at me. “They’re afraid that I’ll uncover the truth behind the death of my father’s boss.” 

Brandon left his words half–said without further explanations. I had to keep asking. “Is your father’s boss someone important? Does his death affect anyone’s interests?” 

“He died over a decade ago. It’s not about interest. They fear the resentment of his children.” 

I tensed inexplicably at Brandon’s words. 

“Does he have children? Have you met them? Do they agree with your investigation?” I bombarded him with questions. 

Brandon lowered his gaze and avoided my eyes. “She doesn’t know.” 

I was at a loss for words. After a moment, I asked, “Will you continue investigating?” 

“Of course.” Brandon didn’t hesitate.

I voiced my thoughts, “But… you might be in danger. The men from yesterday seemed very powerful.” 

A fearless determination flashed in Brandon’s eyes as he looked straight at me. “Are you perhaps worried 

about me?”

Although something seemed off with his words, I nodded and tried to talk some sense into him,” Brandon, both your father and his boss are dead. It won’t bring them back even if you find out the truth. It’s not worth putting yourself in danger.” 

Brandon’s stare turned intense. “Is that what you think?” 

“We should always move on and not dwell on the past. Those used to be my dad’s words to my mom. I had always kept them in mind. 

“Got it,” Brandon replied with a hum before he continued eating. 

I didn’t know what else to say. But to leave just like that seemed inappropriate. As I watched Brandon finish the food, I showered him with praise as my form of gratitude. “Your cooking skills are excellent. Did you learn it in the military? Were you a cook?” 

I knew that the answer was no. He had told me that he was from the special forces. 

“I learned to cook for my sister. She got sick easily since she was young and was a picky eater.” 

I was stunned at Brandon’s words. “You have a sister?” 

“Yes, a biological sister at that,” he clarified as if to stop me from misunderstanding. 

I clicked my tongue. “You never mentioned her.” 

Brandon paused. He looked up and glanced at me. “I haven’t had the chance.”

“How old is she? Is she my age? Is she in school or working?” I asked curiously. 

Brandon didn’t answer at once. The grip on his fork tightened. “She isn’t very healthy.” 

I froze. I didn’t know what to say when I realized I seemed to have pierced him in his sore spot. 

Brandon explained further, “She has a congenital heart disease.” 

I responded by saying, “That can be treated with a heart transplant.” 

Brandon fell silent again. I blurted out when I realized what the problem could be, “Brandon, are you out of money?” 

A heart transplant was a major surgery that required a significant amount of money and annual check- ups. Brandon’s current income was likely insufficient to cover his sister’s surgery. Their father had passed on, and their mother’s situation too was uncertain. 

His gaze made me feel uneasy. I quickly added so he wouldn’t misunderstand, “If that’s the case, I can lend you money. I have enough.” 

“I’m afraid I might not be able to pay it back,” Brandon replied, 

I was convinced that he was short on funds. To help him out, I joked, “Be my man if you can’t pay it back.”
