Chapter 206 

I left home that very night. Brandon wasn’t around, because his windows were pitch black. 

When Conrad called me, I was on the train. 

I had chosen to take the train instead of an airplane. Although the ride would take an extra two hours, 1 liked the feeling of traveling on solid ground as compared to flying in the air. 

“Your car is ready, Maddie. Where are you? I’ll send it over to you.” Conrad’s voice soothed people. 

I looked at the people around me, who were all busy scrolling on their phones. “Just leave it with the mechanic. I’ll bring it back myself.” 

Conrad was silent for a while. I added, “I know where it is.” 

I knew that the Gildons sent their cars to a specific mechanic for repairs. 

“Mr. Howell said that your car’s been tampered with.” Conrad’s words made me pause. I felt guilty, because I was the one who had told them to do it. 

“Really?” I asked, feigning surprise. 

“Has someone else driven your car, Maddie?” Conrad asked, 

I knew that he was just worried about me. I pursed my lip, wondering how I’d answer his question. 

Then, he said, “The person who did that didn’t intend to harm you. He just wanted to stir up a little trouble.. Thank goodness it stopped working only after you got home. It would be a nuisance if it stopped somewhere else.” 

Since he had already put it that way, I no longer had to come up with an excuse. “Got it.” 

Conrad was silent for a while. Then, he said, “Are you outside? I’m hearing some background noise.” “Yeah.” I gave him a one–word reply. 

Conrad could probably tell that I wasn’t really in the mood to talk. “Be careful,” he said softly. 

He hung up, and I sighed. 

Lately, people have been saying that we should cut out the unnecessary parts of our lives. One of the things they mentioned was superfluous social relationships. I think I got it now. 

Socializing and maintaining relationships were tiring. 

The more they cared, the more exhausted I was. 

Despite that, I sent Lisa a message telling her that I had gone out. 

She was busy saving lives all day. It was no surprise that she didn’t respond to my message. For some reason, it dawned on me that that was why she never dated. 

She had said before that when she was busy, she wouldn’t even have the time to look at her phone. No one would want to date her. 

If they did, he might end up being unable to wait for that long. After all, relationships required sacrifice and compromise. 

If things were going to end anyway, it might be better not to date at all. 

I used to call her a hermit. However, I understood her reasoning now. 

Chapter 206 

I took the last 

ain to Amaty. Obviously, I intended to go to Palria to see Brandon’s sister. 

I decided to do this out of impulse. This was the most straightforward way to understand Brandon better. I admitted that I was beginning to develop feelings for Brandon. However, I had been hurt before. I was not going to start falling for someone that easily. If it was to happen, I would want to be in control. 

It was night time when I arrived at Amaty. I didn’t go to the courtyard because I was afraid that Mrs. Rhodes would keep me there. Instead, I went to a hotel to stay the night. 

The next day, I arrived at Palria at 10:00 am. I found Brandon’s house at once. 

I stood outside the yard. I was already regretting my decision to come here. 

I regretted coming here too late. 

This was the yard of my dreams. There were trees, flowers, a vineyard, and a swing. Moss covered the brick walls of the house, and fairy lights decorated the cobblestoned path leading to it. Little lanterns hung on poles and swayed in the air. 

It was a scene right out of a fairytale. There was even a river in front of the yard, and a bridge connecting both sides of the path. Someone was scrubbing their clothes on the bridge. 

I wouldn’t even have known that a place like this could exist if I weren’t staring at it with my own eyes. Words could not describe how beautiful the place was.
