She felt uncomfortable, sure, but not to the point of crying. 

Just then, she overheard someone passing by. 

“It’s snowing.” 

Lena’s eyes snapped up to the sky. 

Snowflakes were drifting down, one by one, twinkling under the streetlights. 

“It’s snowing, Uncle Aaron! It’s snowing!” The excitement of the first snowfall instantly washed away the dull ache in her chest. 

Aaron hummed in acknowledgment. “It is.” 

“This is the first snow,” Lena said as she grabbed onto his arm, shaking it lightly. 

“Uncle Aaron, don’t you remember? First snow wishes always come true.” 

Drunk and giddy, Lena had completely reverted to her eighteen–year–old self. 

“Then make one,” Aaron said, indulging her. 

Lena rocked his arm again. “Let’s wish together! Let’s wish… um…” 

What should she wish for? 

For a moment, she blanked. 

Then, suddenly, she blurted out, “I wish you won’t be able to marry Xandra.” 

“…what?” Aaron’s sharp gaze locked onto hers. 

Meeting his eyes, Lena declared, “Didn’t you say I wouldn’t be able to steal you from Xandra? Well, if Yue Lao won’t let you two be together, then I’ll have a chance to take you back.” 

Aaron narrowed his eyes. “And why do you want to take me back?” 

Her lips, painted with light makeup, shimmered under the glow of the street lamps. A delicate snowflake landed on them, only to melt instantly from her warmth, leaving behind a glistening droplet. 

His Adam’s apple bobbed. 

She didn’t answer. 

Aaron’s voice dropped an octave. “Hmm?” 

The cool sensation of the melting snow tickled her skin. She instinctively flicked out her tongue to catch the moisture, unknowingly stirring the fire in his eyes even further. 

The itch in his throat deepened.

But Lena was oblivious. She stretched out her hand, catching a few falling snowflakes in her palm. “Aaron, look! It’s getting heavier.” 

She had dodged the question.

Instead, his gaze followed hers to the sky. She was right–the snow was coming down thick now. 

He carried her toward the car, but Lena suddenly patted his shoulder. “Don’t get in. I want to stay in the snow.” 

She wasn’t cold, but he was only wearing a thin shirt. 

Still, if this was what she wanted, he would stay. 

The snow fell harder, dusting his dark hair and settling onto his brows. Lena reached out and brushed some away, then murmured a familiar verse from an old poem: 

“If one day we could stand in the snow together, our hair turning white, this life would not have been in vain.” 

Aaron raised a brow. “Do you know the next two lines?” 

Lena grinned. “Of course I do. Are you testing me?” 

“If white hair could be replaced by snow, there would be no sorrowful hearts in this world. 

If only you were by my side, who would need snow to turn our hair white?” 

Aaron scoffed lightly. “Standing in the snow together is nothing more than an excuse made by heartless men.” 

“That’s not true,” Lena objected, shaking her head.
