“Hey, Joey,” Kailee’s voice cut through the air, laced with impatience. “Why are you beating around the bush today? You’re not about to tell me you’ve got a girlfriend, are you? Please, just no. I’m finally over my latest crush, and I don’t want to lose my big brother to some girl.”
Joseph rubbed his temples, feeling as if a fly was buzzing incessantly around his ear. So much noise.
“Why the silence, bro? Did you really find someone?” Kailee’s urgency was palpable now. She got up, pulling off the faux angel wings from her Halloween costume, stretching her limbs, her eyes sharp and searching.
“Who thinks she’s good enough to be my sister-in-law?”
Even though she had a thing for King, her brother was equally important. He’d fought his way up from the bottom, putting in so much effort to get where he was now.
No one was good enough for her brother.
“Would you just zip it for a second and listen?” Joseph’s tone was gentle, but he sighed deeply. “I’ve been shadowing the boss lately. He’s a good guy. But I won’t be coming back to North America any time soon. Please, take care of yourself.”
Kailee froze, her heart squeezing tight.
“Stay safe, okay?”
“Will do.”
After hanging up, Joseph resumed massaging his temples. Such a little pest. It had been years since he’d been close to any woman except for his pesky sister, who had always been by his side. Kailee had been well protected, barely involved in the Sanchez family’s dirty dealings, which was for the best.
Hearing a knock, Joseph quickly went to inform King. They needed to leave immediately; there wasn’t a moment to spare.
The trucks and a hundred men were ready to go, with King and Joseph positioned in the center of the group. The local government, fearing for their safety, had instructed the other ninety-eight men to protect them at all costs.
Meanwhile, in the village, rumors had spread that the government would be sending supplies, prompting each household to send a representative to collect them.
