It wasn't until I arrived that I realized.
What am I supposed to do here?
Assistant Zack smiled and said, "Madam, please don't hold back, feel free to express yourself.
When I entered the CEO's office, I understood.
Charlie was being harassed by a woman.
"Didn't she block a bullet for you back then?"
"I know, you’re so tolerant of her because you feel grateful, but Charlie, you’ve already done enough. What has she done these years but make a joke of herself? Do you know what people outside are saying about you?"
He responded in a dismissive tone, "What are they saying?"
The woman snorted, "They’re saying you’re a henpecked husband, spineless, getting beaten by a woman every day, you’re really shameless."
I, eavesdropping, wiped my sweat nervously.
Charlie wasn’t paying attention: "Oh."
"It’s all jealousy."
The woman was shocked.
Then, with a tearful, aggrieved look, "You value her so much, then what about me? What do I mean to you?"
I finally remembered who she was.
Zoe, the daughter of one of Charlie’s loyal subordinates.
Zoe’s father had saved his life back then, but died in the process.
Charlie, moved by the life-saving grace, raised Zoe like his own sister.
Charlie didn’t even lift his head: "You’re overthinking."
"I don’t even see you."
Zoe didn’t accept it, crying, "If I had been there back then, I would’ve blocked the bullet for you too! What’s so great about her?"
I threw a button into the room.
"Ah, a cockroach!"
Zoe screamed and hid behind Charlie.
Realizing she had been pranked, she was furious and argued, "That doesn’t count!"
"Jenna, you’re cheating!"
"Darling."
"You finally came to pick me up from work."
