Her condition must be even more fragile now, and she needs you more than ever. Yet here you are with me, instead of comforting your sweetheart. Can you really juggle it all?"

Those last words dripped with sarcasm. Silence didn’t sit well with Everett, but her sharp words were even more frustrating.

"Can you stop bringing her up?" Everett's tone turned icy. He never saw Margot as the issue between them, but Selena's constant mention of her was grating.

Pushing past the tightness in her chest, Selena said, slowly and deliberately, "Sign the divorce papers, and both of you can vanish from my life. I won't bring her up again, and I'll keep my distance. You can count on that."

Everett's temper flared, and his handsome face darkened. In a fit of anger, he accidentally knocked over a vase on the nightstand. The vase shattered on the floor, scattering shards everywhere, and the roses inside sprawled across the ground, petals broken.
