When Everett carried Selena into the hospital, Dr. Carrillo was already waiting in the ER. He gently laid her on the bed, turning to Dr. Carrillo with a sincere, “Thanks for handling this.”

Once outside, Alex stepped forward, handing Everett a wet wipe. He took it, wiping his fingers with a slow, deliberate grace. As he glanced casually toward the examination room, he suddenly asked, “Has Dr. Carrillo always been in Newport?”

Dr. Carrillo, known for his reclusive nature, had retired years ago. If it weren’t for Callum's heartfelt plea, he wouldn’t have come out of retirement. By all rights, he should have moved on from Newport by now.

Alex nodded and gave a brief explanation. As it turned out, Dr. Carrillo had stayed on after treating Selena, partly because he fancied a bit of a Western vacation, and partly because the medical team had invited him to stick around for some guidance and exchange.

So, when Alex called him, he was all too happy to agree.

“Is that so.” Everett’s dark eyes narrowed a touch. “Quite a coincidence, indeed.”

Alex watched him closely, unable to decipher whether he bought the story or still smelled something fishy. But since he didn’t say more, she quietly stepped back. As a good employee, she knew when to keep her mouth shut. Her boss’s personal life wasn't her business; she only cared if her paycheck and bonus were fat enough.

Unlike her nosy senior colleague, she wouldn’t meddle in her boss's affairs. Out of the corner of her eye, she spotted a flicker of flame. Looking up, she saw her boss leaning against the wall, cigarette in mouth, hands cupped around a lighter.

He took a deep drag, the smoke lazily curling out, softening his sharp features with a relaxed, undeniable charm. He was undeniably handsome. But snagging a guy like him? That usually came with a hefty price tag.
