“...Got your lips coated with poison, huh? Why not just do us all a favor and finish the job?”

Selena stood firm, not wanting to get into the car. The thought of being enclosed with him again made her uneasy, worried he might spiral out of control.

The man seemed to catch on to her hesitation, smirking, “Here you are, tangled up with your ex-hubby in broad daylight. If this makes the tabloids, Callum, the guy you'd drop everything for to run away with, might not be so thrilled!”

He was throwing her own words back at her, and oh, how she wanted to rip into his smug demeanor! She held herself together, though.

It wasn't about Callum finding out; she just didn't want to be dragged back into the mess with Everett, becoming fodder for idle gossip. She was a mom now, and little Mateo kept tabs on her every move.

Taking a deep breath, she asked quietly, “You’re just giving me a lift home, right?”

“Back to Brook's house!” she added firmly after a moment.

A flash of irritation crossed Everett’s striking face before he quickly masked it. He gave her a once-over, from her face to her neck, down to her curves, her slim waist, and long legs, then coolly replied, “Selena, let’s not kid ourselves. It’s been three years. Do you honestly think you’re indispensable to me?”

Selena forced a smile. She’d never thought that.

He hadn’t been able to live without her before, and certainly not now.

She made her way to the passenger side, opened the door, and settled in.

Throughout the drive, she stared out the window, silent. Enduring this trip was like releasing a long-held breath. Soon, they could part ways for good.

In the thick of rush hour, it took nearly two hours to get back to Brook's house.

When they arrived, Selena plastered on a fake smile and said politely, “Mr. Everett, thanks for the ride. I’m a bit wiped from the trip, so I won’t invite you in. You can take the car; Ricky will come by to pick it up later.”
