Summoning a surge of energy from deep within, Selena managed to shove the man away. Without a second thought, she scrambled to her feet, clutching her clothes tightly around her, and made a run for the door.

Everett lounged on the bed, watching her frantic escape with a hint of amusement. She was so naive. She thought she could play this cat-and-mouse game with him, but only if he decided to play along. She never seemed to get that.

He let her run, his fingers leisurely undoing his shirt buttons.

Selena's bare feet slapped against the wooden floor, each hurried step a testament to her rising panic. Deep down, she knew she was adrift in an endless sea; escaping the room would be futile unless she was willing to leap into the ocean itself. But she was petrified of Everett in his crazed state.

Three years ago, his madness was somewhat contained; Josh was still around, and Everett felt a twinge of guilt about her losing the baby. Plus, he wanted her to stay willingly, so his insanity had its limits.

Now, everything was different.

Josh was gone, and no one could curb the fury that simmered within him. The arrival of little Mateo had shattered the facade of civility he had maintained, reverting him to the obsessively driven Everett!

All she wanted was to get as far away from him as possible, away from this room, this suffocating space.

Selena reached for the doorknob, twisted it, and was just about to dash out when a strong hand clamped down on the back of her neck, yanking her back with force. Another arm swept across her neck, and with a resounding slam, the door shut once more.

Her hands were pinned behind her, her cheek pressed against the cold, damp surface of the door, her back flush against his solid chest. He had shed his shirt, and the dim light in the cabin highlighted the contours of his muscular frame.

Everett turned her face towards him, his voice a low, teasing whisper in her ear, “You like it here, huh? That works for me…”

The difference in their strength made it impossible for Selena to break free, trapping her between the door and his chest, leaving her feeling utterly helpless.

“Everett, can’t you be reasonable for once!” she spat out, her teeth clenched, each word a struggle. “We’ve been divorced for three years. You can’t do this to me. If you try to force anything, I’ll…”
