Selena's hands hung at her sides, clenched so tightly her fingertips turned white. Ava noticed and tried to comfort both Selena and herself. At least little Mateo was with his dad, living in comfort, since he was their cherished son. But deep down, everyone knew the real worry was about the emotional toll on the child. Psychological wounds are the toughest to heal.

“Oh, by the way, Dr. Campbell's here,” Ava said, her voice dropping to a whisper, “He came early this morning and didn’t see you…”

Selena quickly caught on. In other words, Callum knew she hadn't come home last night and had stayed over at Moon Bay.

As she walked into the living room, Callum was sitting on the couch, sipping tea with his usual grace. When he glanced up at Selena, his tender smile was just as warm as ever, and his “Good morning” sounded unchanged.

Selena couldn't tell if it was her sensitivity or the shift in their relationship, but she felt a hint of displeasure from him, a subtle pressure hanging in the air. She sat down, and Callum poured her a cup of tea, sliding it across to her, “Here, have some warm tea.”

She nodded, took a sip to soothe her throat, and chose to explain herself. Since she was committed to being open with him, she didn’t want any misunderstandings.

“I stayed over last night with little Mateo. He was really upset, crying and all; I just couldn’t leave him.”
