This was his way of making amends for the mistakes he'd made. Otherwise, he'd be at home right now, cuddled up on the couch with his wife and kids, watching the New Year’s Eve special.
Instead, he pulled out four red envelopes from his suit pocket and handed them to Selena. "Happy New Year, Selena."
Selena glanced at the envelopes and raised an eyebrow. "If these are for Mateo and Haley, two should do the trick."
Everett reached out, gently clasping her hand, and placed all four envelopes in her palm. "The other two are for you and the baby you're carrying. I promised to treat this child the same."
"And you..." His voice softened, "You're still my wife. It's only right."
Selena corrected him, "Ex-wife."
Everett held his ground, "Ex or not, you’re still my wife. We'll get back together someday. You'll always be my only wife."
Selena, tired of the back-and-forth, shrugged, "Fine, I'll take them. You can go now."
"Alright, goodnight."
With each step away, he reluctantly glanced back until the door closed behind him. Only then did he turn and head to his car.
Selena looked at the envelopes in her hand, a small smile playing on her lips. That crafty man, always full of surprises. She gently touched her belly, thinking, this child is yours too, so taking these envelopes seems fair. Feeling at ease, she tucked them away and headed upstairs.
By the time Everett got back to Lakeside Mansion, the party was over, and the staff were cleaning up. Mila was lounging on the couch, snacking on fruit and watching the New Year's Eve rerun, throwing in a sarcastic comment here and there.
He sat down next to her, loosening his tie, and quipped, "Even food can't keep you quiet? You just have to comment while you chew?"
Mila shot back, "Can you blame me? The show’s got more cringe than I can handle. If I don’t say something, I’d seem out of touch."
