I smirked and nodded. “I wanted to get a better understanding of the company’s operations.“‘ 

“I see, but you’re coming in way too early. You know we don’t pay for overtime, right?” Alex teased. 

I gave him a faint smile. “I’m doing it willingly, no need to worry.” 

“Well, there’s no doubt why you’re the department head. If everyone worked as hard as you, Hueton Corporation would already be at the top!” 

His words were drenched in irony. Knowing Alex’s insincerity, I brushed off his comment like I always did. 

“Still, you shouldn’t be the only one pushing yourself for the company to improve. I’ve already informed our boss of your efforts, and he specifically said you shouldn’t overwork yourself. If something happened to you, it would be a loss for the company.” 

It was obvious Alex was trying to tell me to stop coming in so early. 

Frankly, it didn’t matter anymore. I no longer needed to avoid Ashton. Judging by how he had stopped leaving breakfast at my door, I assumed he finally understood my position. 

“I heard you’re meeting a significant client today. Is that true?” Alex asked, shifting the conversation. 

“Yes, they’re scheduled to arrive at 10:00 a.m. Just an hour away,” I replied with a polite smile. “If there’s nothing else, Mr. Hall, I’ll go prepare for the meeting now.” 

“Of course! Good luck, Ms. Hart.” He raised his coffee in a mock toast before walking off. 

Back in my office, I focused on reviewing the documents for the meeting. At 9:50 a.m., I headed to the conference room to ensure everything was in order. 

The client was crucial to our company. Securing this deal wouldn’t just recover the resources Logan had taken days earlier, but it would also boost our performance by a solid two percentage points. 

At exactly 10:00 a.m., the client arrived. 

The moment the door opened, my expression soured. 

It was Logan. 

Since this wasn’t a Mercer Corporation deal, it didn’t take long to figure out he was using his secret company to disguise his involvement. 

Logan’s eyes glinted with amusement as he extended his hand. “Hello, Ms. Hart.” 

I didn’t take it. Instead, I crossed my arms, fixing him with a cold glare. My frustration simmered just beneath the surface, but I kept my tone professional. “Are you here to collaborate or cause trouble, Mr. 

Mercer?” 

“A collaboration, of course! What else would it be?” he replied, his mischievous smirk making him look more devilish than charming. 

Gone was the reserved, distant Logan I had once known. Now, he seemed to revel in provoking me. 

“Fine. Let’s get started,” I said, keeping my emotions in check. 

Despite my suspicions, I went through the formalities of the meeting.

It was clear Logan hadn’t poured all his efforts into Mercer Corporation. The reason was obvious- Mercer was his father’s company, and no matter what he achieved there, a portion would always belong to Miles. 

Logan agreed to every condition I laid out without hesitation. 

It was too smooth, and that only heightened my unease. Logan wasn’t the type to come here simply for a peaceful partnership. 

After the negotiation wrapped up, Logan pulled me aside, just as I had expected. 

“Elaine,” he began, his voice almost gentle, “you don’t have a future here. Being the department head at this small company–it’s beneath you.”
