Surprisingly, Logan scolded Selene. “You don’t need to worry about my business with her. If you really don’t want any issues between us, stay home and stop running around causing trouble.”
Selene’s face turned pale instantly. Her eyes welled up with tears, making her look utterly pitiful.
“Logan, you find me annoying now, don’t you?” she asked as her tears finally spilled over.
Logan remained silent, his dark expression intensifying.
“If Liam were alive, I wouldn’t be bothering you…” Selene’s voice was faint, but there was an underlying pressure in her words.
“Fine, you can bother me all you want, but leave her out of it,” Logan replied sharply, referring to me

It seemed like the two of them were about to argue. I wasn’t sure if I should stay or leave.
“I understand. From now on, I won’t bother you anymore. I won’t disturb you two either,” Selene mumbled before turning and walking away quickly. This time, Logan didn’t chase after her but instead turned to look at me. I lowered my head slightly and started walking out, but Logan followed closely behind.
As we exited the café, the screech of tires tore through the air. Both Logan
and I looked up to see Selene being hit by a car coming out of the parking
garage.
“Selene,” Logan called softly before rushing over to her.
For a moment, I stood frozen in place. Then, I hurried over as well.
“Logan, the baby…” Selene’s face was deathly pale. She clutched her abdomen with one hand while gripping Logan‘ arm tightly with the other.
Didn’t she just say she wouldn’t bother him anymore? Now, she looked at

him as if he were her lifeline.
It was almost a waste of talent for Selene not to be an actress.

The driver of the car, who turned out to be a company intern, was pale with fear and kept apologizing. “Mr. Mercer, she ran in front of my car all of a sudden!”
“Get lost!” Logan barked angrily before picking Selene up and carrying her to his car.
Since it was rush hour, employees were coming and going from the office. Many witnessed the scene, and whispers started spreading.
“Mr. Mercer looks really worried about that woman. Who is she?”
“That’s not the point. The point is, she mentioned a baby…”
“Oh no, could it be that Mr. Mercer got her pregnant, and now she’s here to confront him?”
“Shh, keep your voice down. You don’t want the ‘wife‘ to hear you.”
Just as they finished their gossip, I walked over. The group of whispering employees quickly looked away in embarrassment and dispersed when they saw the so–called “wife.”
I didn’t make a fuss. After all, it was normal for people to gossip about others. Being the company’s big boss, Logan was naturally a hot topic.
I approached the intern who had hit Selene. He was still visibly shaken, the intern badge around his neck trembling alongside him.
“What happened?” I asked.
Seeing me, the intern stammered nervously, “Ms. Hart, she ran out in front of me…”
I had seen how agitated Selene was earlier. “It’s not your fault. There are surveillance cameras around here. Don’t worry too much.”
Everyone in the company knew I was both Logan‘ assistant and his fiancée. Hearing my calm reassurance, the intern visibly relaxed. “Thank

you, Ms. Hare”
“You can head back now. Any further action will probably happen tomorrow,” I told him before leaving
Afterward, I called Nora to explain what had happened with Selene, and I added, “Let me know how she’s doing later.”
“Why do you care so much? You weren’t the one who hit her,” Nora asked, sounding puzzled.
I stayed quiet for a couple of seconds. “The person who hit her is a company employee. I don’t want him to get into trouble.”
Nora didn’t press further. She was on call that night, so I couldn’t stay at her place indefinitely. Although I had been putting it off, I realized it was time to make other arrangements.
That evening, I went back to my parents‘ house. It had been years since I’d last stayed there. Though the house was old, it was still in decent condition. Most of the furniture remained the same as I remembered, and with a little cleaning, it could easily become livable again.
With the lights on, I walked through each room, memories of my childhood flooding back. When I reached my bedroom and saw the pink bedspread still on the bed, I made a sudden decision.
I didn’t need to go anywhere else. I would live here.
Although it was a half–hour drive to the office, that wasn’t too far. It took just as long to get there from the Mercer estate.
With this idea in mind, I immediately started cleaning. By 10:00 p.m., the house was spotless.
However, my phone never rang. The only update I received was a text from Nora. It read, “The woman and the baby are fine.”
That was good news. At least it meant the intern wouldn’t be fired.
That night, I slept in my parents‘ house. Surprisingly, I wasn’t afraid to sleep there alone. On the contrary, I slept soundly
