On my way back or maybe ever since I learned about Tom’s identity–this question had been gnawing
at me.
Ashton’s eyes flickered with a hint of emotion before he answered, “When you were little, I gave you a piggyback ride. And… you kissed me.”
His words caught me completely off guard. If I hadn’t had my fair share of romantic experiences, that statement would’ve made me blush furiously.
“Really?” I asked, raising an eyebrow. “Where did I kiss you?”
Instead of answering, Ashton took a step closer. We were already standing close, but now the space between us nearly vanished. My heart skipped a beat, but I held my ground, refusing to step back.
Looking down at me, his warm breath brushed against my forehead. His voice was low and teasing. “Do you want me to show you?”
I froze, speechless.
In that moment, I was absolutely certain of one thing: Ashton was far from the innocent, straightforward man he appeared to be. He was a master of catching people off guard–a pro at flirting when he wanted to be.
My face flushed, and I found myself too embarrassed to meet his gaze. “Dream on,” I muttered before turning and running off.
Behind me, I heard him chuckle softly. It was clear he had teased me on purpose.
As I ran, a strange memory surfaced in my mind. It was like a dream I’d had before–a–vivid image of being on someone’s back, tugging at them playfully and calling them “Ash.” Could that memory have
been real? Could it have been Ashton?
But there was no way to know for sure. I’d been too young at the time. The only people who might have known were my parents, and they were no longer here. The only person left who could give me answers was Ashton. He was much older than me, so there was a chance he still remembered.
Still, I couldn’t bring myself to ask him about it.
Even though I was running, Ashton’s long strides quickly caught up to me. “The lights are all set up,” he said casually. “Do you have time tonight?”
I knew he wanted me to see the lighting effects he’d been working on, but my heart was still racing from his teasing. So, I replied on purpose, “Nope. I’m busy tonight.”
“When will you have time, then?” Ashton asked, his tone calm but persistent.
“I’m not sure yet. I…” Just as I was about to say something to keep him guessing, my phone rang. It was a call from Caleb.
I gestured to Ashton to give me a moment, stepped aside, and answered the call. “Caleb?”
“Where are you?” he asked casually.
“I’m outside,” I replied before quickly cutting to the chase. “Did you find anything about what I asked you to look into?”
