Caleb’s response genuinely caught me off guard. He’d always treated me like a younger sister, occasionally teasing me but never crossing any boundaries. 

But today’s “joke” felt like it had gone a step too far. 

Alex, too, seemed surprised. His gaze shifted between the two of us, scrutinizing the dynamic. Meanwhile, Caleb walked right up to me, ignoring Alex entirely. “Let’s head inside,” he said casually. 

I gave Alex a polite nod and followed Caleb, though out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Alex opening his mouth as if he wanted to say something but thinking better of it. 

Once we were out of earshot, I turned to Caleb. “Were you trying to ruin my romantic prospects with that little stunt?” I asked, crossing my arms. 

“You mean that guy? He seemed pretty unreliable,” Caleb replied without hesitation. 

His blunt evaluation made me laugh. “Oh? And what makes you the expert?” 

“I’m usually spot–on when it comes to judging people,” he said confidently. “I won’t be wrong about this one. Stay away from him in the future.” 

“Alright, fine,” I responded with a playful smile. 

But Caleb wasn’t laughing. “I’m serious, Elaine. Don’t take it as a joke.” 

I nodded, holding back a chuckle. “I’m serious too. I’m not interested in that type of person anyway.” 

Caleb glanced at me, his tone softening slightly. “Then, what kind of person are you interested in?” 

Ashton’s image flashed in my mind. “Someone who seems stern and aloof on the outside but is warm on the inside…” I paused, thinking of him in the kitchen, wearing an apron and cooking for me. “And someone who can cook.” 

Caleb raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. “That’s it? Your standards are pretty down–to–earth.” 

I shrugged, staring at the elongated shadows our figures cast under the lights. “In life, who isn’t down- to–earth? Isn’t everything ultimately about sharing meals and living simply?” 

He smirked, nodding. “Fair enough.” 

We arrived at the elevator, and Caleb pressed the button. As we stepped inside, the mirrored walls reflected our faces. Caleb looked at me curiously. “So… have you found someone like that?” 

I hesitated for a moment before answering, “Yes.” 

He pressed his lips together, his expression unreadable. I half–expected him to ask who it was or suggest meeting the person someday, but he just gave me a faint smile and stayed silent. 

I couldn’t help but wonder–did he already know? 

“Caleb,” I said, breaking the silence. “Did you find out anything about that person? Their name? Maybe a photo?” 

The elevator dinged as we reached our floor. 

Caleb placed a hand on my head, ruffling my hair gently. “Don’t worry. Come with me.” 

I trusted him, so I followed him into a private room.
