More Than A Favor
Chapter 22
When I returned to the company, everyone looked surprised to see me
“Ms. Hart? Aren’t you and Mr. Mercer getting married today? Why are you here?” one of my co–workers asked, their voice laced with curiosity.
“I suddenly remembered there are a few important tasks I haven’t finished” I replied calmly.
They exchanged glances, clearly baffled by my response.
I had always been diligent and responsible at the company–1 never slacked off, even though I was the boss’s fiancée. That wouldn’t change
now.
“Mrs. Mercer is putting pressure on us. She’s leading by example,” Maya joked, adding a cute emoji in the group chat.
When I received Logan‘ call again, I was sitting in Celestial Church, listening to a sermon.
“Elaine, it’s almost 11 o’clock. Why aren’t you here yet?” Logan‘ voice carried a trace of urgency.
“I’m almost there. Just wait a little longer,” I replied calmly.
I was late on purpose. I had loved him for ten years and couldn’t even count the number of times I had waited for him. Today, I decided he could wait for me. Consider it a small repayment for the ten years of youthful love I had given him.
“Hurry up. Don’t miss the auspicious time Mr. Cain mentioned,” Logan urged again, his tone growing anxious.
At that moment, I was sitting in front of Alexander Cain himself. He hadn’t mentioned anything about my marriage or the so–called auspicious time. It was clear he had no idea that Logan and I were supposed to register our marriage today.

It was impossible for Alexander to have calculated any auspicious time at
all.
Thummed noncommittally and hung up. Then, I turned off my phone and continued listening to the sermon.
Logan‘ belief in gods and deities stemmed from his childhood. He had fallen gravely ill once, and Tessa had gone to the mountains to pray for three days and three nights, Miraculously, Logan had recovered. Since then, Tessa had been devoted to her faith, even asking Alexander to take Logan as his student.
I had followed Logan everywhere back then, and that included Celestial Church. Alexander had even prayed for Logan and me to end up together. But prayers alone couldn’t fix what was broken.
I left Celestial Church at 3:00 p.m. and didn’t bother turning my phone back on. I drove to the courthouse, though I already knew what I’d find. Logan was long gone by the time I arrived.
I wasn’t surprised. I didn’t know how long he had waited, but I was certain it wasn’t as long as I had waited for him over the years.
I parked the car and finally turned my phone back on. Instantly, a deluge of missed calls and messages bombarded my screen. Most of them were from Logan.
There were 53 missed calls and seven messages.
The messages read:
– “Elaine, have you arrived? Why is your phone turned off?”
– “Elaine, it’s already time. If you don’t come soon, you’ll miss the
auspicious time.”
– “Elaine, what’s going on?”
– “Elaine, answer the messages. Answer your phone.”
– “Elaine, the courthouse closes in 20 minutes. We won’t be able to get the
certificate if you don’t come.”

As I scrolled through the messages, I could practically picture Logan‘ expression shifting from urgency to anger and finally to frustration.

The last message had been sent at 11:55 a.m. His patience had lasted less
than an hour.
I stared at the 53 missed calls for a moment before dialing him back. The call barely rang once before he hung up, a clear sign he was furious that I had stood him up and ignored his attempts to reach me.
I didn’t call again.
Instead, I went through the messages from Nora, who Logan had clearly contacted to ask about me. She had sent several worried texts, asking where I was.
I replied with a voice message: “Don’t worry about me. I’m fine. I just went to burn some incense.”
