Back at the office, Maya rushed over the moment I arrived. “Ms. Hart, you went to Mr. Mercer’s office, didn’t you? What did you talk about? Did you two make up?”
“What do you think?” I replied, meeting her gaze directly.
I
Under my stare, Maya fidgeted nervously and grabbed my arm. “I’m sorry, Ms. Hart. I didn’t mean to hide it from you. I was just afraid you’d be upset…
“You were afraid it would affect work, and you’d get scolded, right?” I said, cutting to the heart of her thoughts.
Maya bit her lip, guilt written all over her face. “I’m sorry, Ms. Hart…”
“It’s not your fault. Self–preservation is human nature,” I said sincerely. I didn’t blame Maya. After all, even among sisters, one would prioritize herself before helping the other.
“Ms. Hart… Maya shook my arm, as though wanting to say more.
I cut her off, “Mr. Mercer said if we don’t resolve the lighting issue, we’ll be held responsible. We don’t have time to dwell on anything else. Let’s focus on fixing the problem.”
Maya’s eyes widened. “But it’s not our fault! We’re being blamed for something we didn’t do.”
“We’re responsible for this project. If there’s a problem, we’re the first ones accountable. No excuses. If we don’t want the consequences, we have to fix it,” I said firmly.
Maya didn’t argue further. She nodded and turned away, muttering under her breath, “Using public power for personal revenge…
I knew exactly what she meant. Logan was venting his frustrations with me through this situation.
I sighed. Didn’t I already know that? But the more he tried to blame me, the more determined I was to resolve this issue flawlessly. That way, I’d leave him with nothing to criticize.
Besides, this amusement park wasn’t just another project to me. It was my way of fulfilling my dad’s dream. I couldn’t allow any flaws. My dad was a perfectionist, and I wanted to prove that his daughter was just as capable.
Maya soon returned with the contact information for the lighting manufacturer and the construction team. I made the necessary calls and arranged for both parties to meet on–site to discuss the problem. They agreed, but the earliest they could come was the day after tomorrow.
For now, there was no point in stressing over it.
Since Maya had barely slept the night before, I gave her the day off to rest. Meanwhile, I decided to visit the Mercer estate. I’d cleared things up with Logan, but I still needed to settle things with his family.
As I was packing up to leave, Selene appeared.
“Elaine, can we talk?” she asked hesitantly.
I had just checked the personnel records and learned that Selene had joined the company three days ago as a supervisor in the administration department. I was in the project department, so we had no direct connection. Her visit clearly wasn’t work–related.

“What do you want to talk about, Ms. Vaughn?” I asked, keeping my tone formal.
Selene’s sudden promotion to supervisor was glaringly obvious–Logan‘ doing. His actions were no different from an ancient emperor bewitched by beauty.
Her parachuting into the role was sure to cause gossip among employees. And Logan? He didn’t seem to care about how it reflected on the company–or on me, his supposed fiancée–to-be.
“It’s a personal matter,” Selene said, her face flushed with embarrassment.
