“Elaine, you fell on purpose, didn’t you?” 

I couldn’t believe Maya jumped to that conclusion. My side was still throbbing, and I probably had a nasty bruise forming. I wanted to lift my shirt and show her just how real that fall was. 

I wasn’t stupid enough to risk getting hurt just to get close to someone. 

I rolled my eyes but let her continue. “So what was it like? Are his arms as strong as they look? How did it feel when he-” 

“Maya!” 

I cut her off. “Get your mind out of the gutter!” 

Seeing I was actually mad, she stuck out her tongue and mumbled something under her breath – too quiet for me to catch. 

Still holding my sore side, I left the control room. 

Then it hit me – Ashton had called me over but never finished what he was going to say. He was the reason I ended up tripping and making a fool of myself. 

Interesting guy. 

I definitely needed to keep my distance. Had to stay professional and treat him like any other 

contractor. 

After all, we’d only met once on a blind date. Nothing more to it than that. 

Maya handed Ashton the documents he’d asked for and came out. Seeing me waiting, she said, “Elaine, Mr. Drake wants us to check out the problem lights first. He’ll catch up in a minute.” 

I nodded and was about to head over with Maya when my phone rang. It was Caleb. “Where are you? How could you just ditch me like that?” 

I froze. He’d been here forever. Hadn’t he left yet? 

Had he seriously tried every ride in the park? 

“I thought you’d gone home,” I said honestly. 

“Nope. Where are you?” he asked. 

I told him where we were heading to fix the lights, and he said he’d come find me. But it took him 

almost an hour to show up. 

“Get lost?” I teased. 

He was playing with a plastic ball from the ball pit. Classic Caleb – being a snooker champ, he couldn’t resist anything that looked like a pool ball. 

“Please, I’ve done mazes all over the world. This little amusement park is child’s play,” he bragged. Besides snooker, Caleb was obsessed with mazes. 

Logan once told me that Caleb made a point to tackle every maze wherever he traveled. He’d pretty much conquered all the famous ones and was now hunting down underground mazes. 

Takes all kinds to make a world, I guess. Some people are into racing, others bird watching, exploring.

He pulled his hand back and walked away. 

I held the ball, still warm from his hands. My heart felt a little heavy watching him leave. 

I’d thought I’d lose everything and everyone after splitting with Logan, but that wasn’tte 

Even if some friendships started because of Logan, they didn’t have to end because of him 

“Ms. Hart?” Ashton’s voice broke through my thoughts 

I snapped back to reality and turned around. Hadn’t even noticed Maya, Ashton, and the tech guy showing up behind me. 

Maybe I was imagining it, but Ashton seemed colder than usual. I wondered if something was wrong. “Any issues with the equipment?” 

“Already got another tech working on it,” he said flatly. 

I nodded. Before I could ask what was next, he said, “We’re not fixing the lights today.” 

“What?” I was shocked. 

The tech guy jumped in, “There’s a voltage issue with the wiring. We need to fix that first.” 

I frowned. “How long will that take?” 

“We can finish it today.” 

I breathed a secret sigh of relief. I’d been worried it might take days. 

“Anything else you need from me?” I asked Ashton.
