The scene caught me off guard, instantly sobering me up. It was awkward, to say the least–a woman
stuck between two men.
I had to make a decision to break the tension, and one thing was clear: I could never be with Miles. If I had to choose between the two, it would only be Ashton.
I had almost married Logan. There was no way I’d break up with him only to end up with his brother Instead.
“Miles, I’m tired,” I finally said.
Miles’s grip
on me tightened briefly before he reluctantly let go.
Ashton, still holding my hand, led me away, I didn’t look back, but I could feel Miles’s eyes on me as we walked away.
Maybe it was the alcohol or the mess in my head, but I tripped on the hotel steps. Before I could catch myself, Ashton scooped me up into his arms.
“Put me down,” I said, clutching his shirt.
“If you want him to give up, stay quiet,” he whispered.
Recalling Miles’s earlier words, I stayed still. I could be in a complicated relationship with anyone, but not Miles. To me, he was like a brother–like family.
I had never seen him romantically, not even once. I valued our relationship too much to ruin it.
Miles wasn’t the type to express love openly or chase someone persistently. If he believed I had feelings for someone else–someone other than Logan–he would likely let go.
In the end, I let Ashton carry me into the hotel lobby. He didn’t put me down until we reached the door
of my room.
I knew Miles had feelings for me, and I could tell Ashton did too. Since I’d already cut things off with Miles, I might as well put an end to Ashton’s feelings as well.
As Ashton let go of me, I clung to him instead. Grabbing the front of his shirt, I looked him straight in
the eyes.
“Ashton, you’re a handsome man,” I said boldly.
“Mmhm.” He seemed amused, letting me take in his features.
Fueled by the alcohol, I lifted my hand and traced the bridge of his nose. “There must be a lot of women who like you.”
“Mmhm.” His confidence was evident.
I chuckled and moved my fingers to the corner of his eyes. “Maya likes you too.”
I wasn’t betraying Maya–it was just that her feelings were written all over her face. Ashton wasn’t blind. Even if I didn’t say it, he had to have noticed.
“How about you? Do you like me?” Ashton asked, his tone serious.
I was taken aback for a moment, then shook my head. “No, I don’t.”
